Pay for phd candidates is low
Some of the Max planck institutes are at remote locations

    I have been working at Max-Planck-Gesellschaft full-time

    Pros

very relaxed atmosphere, sparkling water machine, work on whatever you want to, no fixed hours, acceptable coffee machine, lively scientific environment.

    Cons

the pay is atrocious, but this is standard in academia at the postdoc level. it is very far from berlin and nobody wants to live in Golm. foreigners get screwed on benefits and employments status.

    Advice to Management

treat foreign employees like german employees; that is, allow them to join statutory insurance plans, and allow them to be eligible for unemployment and kindergeld.

    I worked at Max-Planck-Gesellschaft full-time

    Pros

Great place to do research: lots of freedom; international and stimulating environment; amazing colleagues; people work a lot (which is very motivating); great facility; decent compensation compared to other public research institutions

    Cons

Compensation is still bad compared to industry positions; only temporary positions available (except directorship); some PhD-advisors appear not to do well at teaching their students and consistently have students who barely manage to obtain their degree; people tend to work a lot (which makes you neglect your work-life balance)

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The institute offers unparalleled freedom to pursue research,
Excellent opportunities for collaborating with top researchers from different areas of applied mathematics,
Excellent administration, library, and infrastructure, including a computer cluster and access to numerous other resources,
Many exciting topics lectures, seminars, workshops, conferences,
Very dynamic research environment, with many national and international guests,
The location, Leipzig, is one of the most exciting cities in Germany, with top infrastructure and yet relatively low living expenses.

    Cons

None, the institute is doing an excellent job at making the working environment pleasant and productive. A possible drawback of the location is that positions are mostly temporary.

    Advice to Management

The management is doing an excellent job. The IMPRS program offers excellent possibilities for graduate students. The science dissemination through Nacht der Wissenschaften and other programs such as visiting high schools are good.
