I have been working at Max-Planck-Gesellschaft for more than 6 years

    Pros

Well equipped labs, lots of funding, great infrastructure, good equipment. The directors at my institute are very down to earth and friendly, easy to talk to.

    Cons

Stressful work environment and low salaries for PhD students. In general a bit exploitative towards PhD students, since there is such a large supply of them.

I have been working at Max-Planck-Gesellschaft full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

The environment is international and very informal. The research facilities are awesome. Working times are flexible. There is not teaching obligation.

    Cons

Compared to industry, the salary is lower, especially for PhD students. There are no benefits, For instance, lunch is not provided, and the cafeteria is pretty expensive. Contracts are time-limited.

    Advice to Management

PhD students are payed a lot less compared to other institutes. More benefit would be very appreciated. For instance, some sport facilities.

I have been working at Max-Planck-Gesellschaft for more than 4 years

    Pros

    No mandatory teaching for PhD. students, almost no budgetary limitation for new equipment and experiments;

    Cons

Very competitive environment, most PIs care more about high impact publication than insuring certain levels of education of PhD. students

    I worked at Max-Planck-Gesellschaft

    Pros

Great research environment, dynamic and highly interdisciplinary. Lots of collaboration opportunities with researchers from all over the world. Open your mind and expand your horizon.

    Cons

PhD students might not get enough support from project leaders or colleagues. Teaching part in the first period is weak. Do not try to learn something new in your PhD, try to continue your research topics from your Msc.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Max-Planck-Gesellschaft full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

    * Supervisor is always supportive of new ideas and projects, still total freedom to decide what to work on. Even financial support for material/conferences etc. is usually available. * Great colleagues, Great technical infrastructure * relatively good salaries for PhD students

    Cons

    * Very dependent on your director/group leader. In other departments it may be less nice. * Not everyone can cope with that much freedom. * Sometimes problems might not get noticed. * Very few permanent positions. Most PhD students/postdocs have to move on after a few years.

    Advice to Management

Nothing to improve in my department. I liked my work in the last years very much. It is almost sad that I have to graduate and move on now. In other departments it probably makes sense give leadership training to the group leaders.
