I worked at Maxim Integrated full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Free coffee/tea in the break room. Benefits package is better than most, I hear.

    Cons

Not all supervisors know what is done in the section they supervise, nominal attention afforded to hourly employees, Salaried staff are treated better than hourly. One mistake or have too many years, and it is out the door.

    Advice to Management

Take to heart the creed established long ago by founder Jack Gifford, not just give it lip service. Work harder to make ONE MAXIM a real concept.

    Pros

    Good medical benefits and compensation

    Cons

Employee values are low for long time employees, except for a chosen few career proogression is very poor. Low visibility and transparency if you are down below in the hierarchy.

    Advice to Management

    Value your employees

I worked at Maxim Integrated (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The benefits package is excellent, and that includes 4 weeks of PTO to start

    Cons

You are discouraged from using your PTO in many cases, and mandatory overtime is normal during the summer. Very little room for growth if you're working on the fab floor.

    Advice to Management

    Encourage work/life balance.

    Pros

Direct coworkers are good to work with. That is honestly it. Everyone works hard, but isn't good enough to keep your job.

    Cons

Management seems to believe that if you lay enough R&D people off, they will reduce R&D costs while magically creating the same amount of output.

    Advice to Management

If you lay every one off, how will the chips get designed? Think they magically appear or something? If R&D costs are too high as a percentage of income, either the Sales dept can't sell or the definers are comming up with the wrong ideas... So why lay off the engineers?

    Pros

The place was bad when Jack Gifford was around, but under Tunch the wheels came off.

    Cons

    Too many to list really.

    Advice to Management

Change the CEO immediately. The fish rots from the head down

    Pros

The company manufactures world class products that compete with the best. The work environment is safe and professional, though the cube volume decreases almost annually.

    Cons

Very closed and "clubby" management that doesn't trust of anyone from outside the few companies that it competes with. This, and financial micromanagement, has really hindered their ability to take the company into new areas of growth. If you work here you'll be better off just focusing on the job that you were hired for. Don't take a career orientation and keep your resume up to date. Also, this industry is in severe consolidation mode, so make sure that whatever job or task you perform has some carryover into another industry just in case industry consolidation catches up with you.

    Advice to Management

The company is run purely on financial performance metrics and this has really limited growth opportunities. Might be a good idea to bring someone in at a high level from outside the company.

    Pros

Compensation is pretty good, benefits too.

    Cons

Indian culture of "blaming you" for any shortcomings or failed assignments is pervasive throughout the executive management team. Quite the opposite of the teachings of Deming's, the father of quality processes.

    Advice to Management

Just sell as fast as you can.
