I have been working at Maxim Integrated full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Senior leadership with strategic direction and not afraid to take calculated risks
Display a genuine concern for employees development and growth
    Pay for performance

    Cons

Saturated market - flat to slow-growth revenue in last few years

    Advice to Management

Continue with the strategic direction and never be afraid to undergo the changes. It may be difficult in the short-term but those who stick to the end are worth it.

    Pros

Profitable company with strong focus on success. Competence is king here -- lots of VERY smart, very committed people. A team environment with all focused on success. Excellent benefits, especially health. Company looks after employees. Company really does the goal setting other companies talk about. The "13 Principles" are really practiced.

    Cons

Focus on productivity and accomplishment sometimes means not as sensitive or warm as some companies. Not a lot of "warm and fuzzy" here. Terrible place to be if you're not very competent or not interested in success of self and company, but plenty of reward if you're competent and committed. Not as much training as there should be.

    Advice to Management

Need to do more training and have better support for inexperienced employees. There has been a lot of progress, hope to see more. Improve cooperation and communication between business groups.

    Pros

Fast Pace, wide range of duties, world-wide, freedom to create. Maxim is a busy place, with minimal staffing. Recent upper managment changes have improved conditions, but has a long way to go. Over 8000 employees world-wide, they have a great respect for family, and very professional place to work. No shortage of challenges.

    Cons

Went many years without upgrading equipment needed for employees, so many tasks are done with old technology or work-arounds. Company-direction changes are not conveyed very well, but efforts are in place to change this. Lack of investment in infrastructure has always been an issue, resulting in minimal services and hardware.

    Advice to Management

drop the goals system, replace with accomplishments system. If you accomplish nothing during a quarter, you get nothing. If you accomplish something, you are rewarded. Too often, goals do not reflect extra effort put out by employee, and good accomplishments that had to be dealt with are forgotten.

    Advice to Management

Continue to be agressive in acquisitions. Work on eliminating silos and improve collaboration.

    Pros

Financially Strong and Growing. Very well positioned in the market and very highly regarded. In a period of changing the company culture. Overall a very positive place to be.

    Cons

Salary seems to be average but top performers seem to be getting rewarded better lately. Bonuses are driven by goals which can sometimes be gamed by weaker performers.

    Advice to Management

management needs to be tougher on weak employees and upgrade them whenever possible.

    Pros

Positive cultural shift under way (more collaborative, communicative); extremely smart and dedicated employees; great products; renewed focus on customers; new, modern HQ campus opens in 2012

    Cons

Intense work ethic; product-centric focus; rather insular and myopic (old habits?); should be very proud of its achievements and no longer remain quiet

    Advice to Management

This is a remarkable, established company but not yet well known; continue to value new culture of collaboration and communication...and LEAD

-Very competent colleagues, who work hard and want to do their best.
-Improving company culture, Maxim is focusing more on employees and becoming more innovative
    -Stable, profitable company

    Cons

-Sometimes leadership doesn't look at the long-term strategy, they're too busy putting out fires.
-There are still remnants of Maxim's old micromanagement culture, which stunts employee satisfaction.

    Advice to Management

Keep going with the culture changes, and trust your employees. They want the best for the company too!

    Pros

The Maxim Principles (now Core Values) are not just BS printed on a coffee mug or posted on people's cubicle walls, people at Maxim really live by such principles as not accepting the status quo, always standing up for what you believe to be right, and trying as hard as you can.

I trust in our company's leaders. I know they thoroughly consider all major decisions, they are very forward looking, and I believe they act in the best interest of Maxim's customers, employees, and stock holders.

Maxim demands commitment and hard work, and it makes it a better place to work because I take pride in working for a company that holds itself to a high standard. There is no frustration about people not carrying their weight.

People are promoted based on merit, and they are compensated based on merit.

    Cons

There are exceptions to the great parts of Maxim. There are the occasional weak employees, there are the occasional poor managers, and there are the occasional bad decisions.

    Advice to Management

Continue to focus on employee job satisfaction. I have seen a huge improvement in this area over the last x years, and would love to see it continue. I’m talking in particular about the little things, like involving employees in planning of company events, to ensure the return on investment for large company events is worthwhile - because the employees are able to really enjoy the events. Maybe increase team building opportunities. This is encouraged in some groups, but not others. Make a budget for team building that is lost if not used. Every other quarter require involvement from employees from multiple departments in order to use the budget to help increase collaboration. Provide a free lunch once a week. Or offer free snacks in the break rooms on Fridays. Little things make a big difference.
