I worked at Maxim Integrated full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Family oriented, plenty of opportunities for lateral and upward advancement. Executive management is accessible and approachable... Happy to see they are attempting to modernize and refresh their reputation and brand

    Cons

Despite efforts to refresh their brand, the company is still very old school with limited flexibility. You work long hours and are expected to work/attend meetings while on vacation. Executives and upper management allow personal and internal politics to overshadow some very intelligent, and hard working employees of all levels.

Policies and procedures are set in such a way with too many players that it was nearly impossible to leave a meeting on time or execute / get approval on a project. Collaboration was the buzz, but individuals and departments failed continually to execute.

    I began to miss Jack's 13 Principles.

    Pros

They are moving to a nice new facility. The group I work for is nice. The CEO seems like a nice guy.

    Cons

Compensation is below the standard. The growth is slow. Needs a stronger work culture to promote team building activities which currently are very rare.

"Talent and Hard Work are Rewarded"

    Pros

Work hard in a challenging environment and get rewarded for it. Maxim expects excellence at all times. Surrounded by very talented and focused individuals. As a large successful company we enjoy many technical and business advantages over small companies. We have immediate name recognition with every electronics maker in the world (ie every door is open or cracked). Access to advanced technologies and processes with good costs is a nice plus. The opportunity is there if you want to make it happen.

    Cons

Big company can make simple tasks difficult. There are many teams in many different locations and that can be frustrating at times.

    Pros

    - stable and profitable whatever whenever
    - not too much pressure
    - there are much to learn if you are willing to learn
    - good life work balance if you work smartly

    Cons

    - there are no cons actually if you are a stable and tradional old style family-oriented engineer.
    - if you want great risk and reward, go to a startup, Maxim-ic is a stable and slowly progressive company which is not bad for the whole global economy.

    Advice to Management

    - keep doing what you are doing, Maxim-ic is growing slowly but it's OK.
    - more reward to those hard-working engineers if possible.
    - get rid of those lazy guys (worst performers and never improving).

    Pros

    - Innovation is constantly encouraged - company operates on the idea that they can always do something better, more efficiently, cheaper. If you have an idea to improve a process or product, you have the opportunity to voice that, and often times, implement that change.
    - Exposure - employees have the opportunity to get involved and gain exposure to new people, groups, projects, etc.
    - Great benefits package - multiple options at a low cost, 401(k) match with immediate vesting, gym membership discounts, sponsorship for employees participating in leagues/races, tuition reimbursement
    - Culture change is a big focus for FY12 - moving towards a more collaborative, integrated culture. Changes are already apparent!
    - Stable company that has remained successful throughout the recession, great industry to work in

    Cons

    - Fast-paced, challenging environment - although this is not always a con!
    - Sometimes long hours are required, but this is often the case in any company

    Pros

Benefits are good. Senior management (VP and above) are competent and want to do well.

    Cons

    1. There is no team work. Even engineers in your own team backstab you on occasions.
    2. Lower level management are either unethical or incompetent. One manager (now director) essentially outsources engineering jobs in the US over to Turkey; treat employees here with utmost disrespect, and backstab people left and right.
    3. Too many people seem to be content waiting for retirement. You never see engineers younger than 30. At times it feels like a retirement home.
    4. Base salary lower than any companies I worked for.
    5. Project management with Project Success Method is extremely inefficient. It is good for project managers and management to play pass the buck.
    6. Business management in certain Business units are incompetent. Some don't even show up to work!
    7. Promotions are based on who you know and sucking up, and not on achievements or competence.

    Advice to Management

Maxim is still an engineering company. Stop treating engineers like second class citizens compared to business managers.

    Pros

There are many interesting engineering project and work, and there are some sharp technical people within the company. Overall good company strategy.

    Cons

The company is trying to change its culture. But is still learning how to empower employees. There are many opportunities to grow the infrastructure.

    Advice to Management

I don't have any particular opinion or advice. Wish Maxim can grow into a world class analog and mixed signal company.

    Pros

Great sense of family; not too political; if you want to make change there aren't many obstacles in your way

    Cons

Lack sophisticated infrastructure and perks of other high-techs in the Valley; IT leadership is rooted in the 90's; underinvestment problem with key, strategic projects

    Advice to Management

Changing culture is more than just saying we are going to change, leadership needs to lead by example. Loosen the ties, let light into the buildings, let employees flourish.
