I have been working at Maxim Integrated full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Mostly good people, very interesting technology, people work hard. Much more organized than before. Fast-paced.

    Cons

Seems to be betting very political. Hard work isn't always rewarded. Good people are not treated well. Poor middle and upper management with lack of vision. The focus is on short term profits. Good technology is being milked, with limited investment in advancing the state of art. Competition is catching up.

    Advice to Management

Treat people better. Be serious about investing in technology if you're serious about maintaining margins.

I worked at Maxim Integrated full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Family oriented, plenty of opportunities for lateral and upward advancement. Executive management is accessible and approachable... Happy to see they are attempting to modernize and refresh their reputation and brand

    Cons

Despite efforts to refresh their brand, the company is still very old school with limited flexibility. You work long hours and are expected to work/attend meetings while on vacation. Executives and upper management allow personal and internal politics to overshadow some very intelligent, and hard working employees of all levels. Policies and procedures are set in such a way with too many players that it was nearly impossible to leave a meeting on time or execute / get approval on a project. Collaboration was the buzz, but individuals and departments failed continually to execute. I began to miss Jack's 13 Principles.

I worked at Maxim Integrated full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good salary, benefits and equipment. Overall, they build a good product. They know every business units' profit and loss. They are a public company.

    Cons

Upper management is very ignorant of what individual business units are really doing. They are very focused on short term profits. They measure everything.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on long term goals and profits. Do not downsize workforce at the beginning of each and every single 2nd quarter.

I worked at Maxim Integrated full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

good technology, solid legacy products, solid industry reputation.

    Cons

Opportunity for personal growth limited, has become political internally. Upper management disconnected from lower levels. To many slogans. Decisions made in a vacuum without consulting the management most affected. The top level management level has had a chaotic last year with many of them leaving and many new hires made outside the company. They are searching to establish a long lasting culture and seem to want to distance themselves greatly from the past roots. The recent change in logo is an example and it looks like an eye chart. The company is still full of good people however in its past it had one of the best concentrations of talent in the valley.

    I worked at Maxim Integrated

    Pros

Good business model. Initially granted ability to change, create, improve. Decent benefits and bonus program. Talented group of co-workers that would work long hours for the joy of creating quality work.

    Cons

Drastic change in work environment over last few years. Tyrannical upper management. Lack of trust in the organization. All emphasis on negatives. Loyal employees no longer fit new organizational model.

    Advice to Management

Pounding on a table during meetings is generally not a good motivational tool. Some positive reinforcement is a good thing. Take a good look at why morale is so bad at so many locations.

I have been working at Maxim Integrated

    Pros

Good technical knowledge. Able to get designs to market and see results of your work. Flexible holiday schedules. Ability to move to different design centers around the country if you desire.

    Cons

Upper management rules by whim and engenders fear. Panic mode set in for many groups. Limited cooperation between business units. No motivation for stock appreciation. Designers expected to do design, product engineering, production support, customer support, with little support. Remote design sites shut down suddenly for no apparent reason, and goon squads sent in to manage dismissal.

    Advice to Management

You are running on a skeleton crew, and many people are ready to burn out. You need to show some loyalty to the employees who have committed to your company.

  7. "Maxim is a lively, sometimes chaotic, place where creativity and persistence are rewarded"

I have been working at Maxim Integrated

    Pros

Dynamic environment, good growth potential, creativity is rewarded, flat organizational structure, good access to upper management, company takes care of it's employees

    Cons

Sometimes overly aggressive culture, communication of direction from upper management could stand improvement, many internal systems are outdated and inefficient,

    Advice to Management

Communicate companywide direction more effectively and drive business units towards those goals. Without active direction, the company's naturally competitive nature kicks in and can undermine the big picture.

    I worked at Maxim Integrated

    Pros

I was able to continue and finish college while employed at Maxim. Company Benefits are among the best around across all industries

    Cons

micro managed like no other place on earth. Upper management had little regard for the little guys. Way too many chiefs and not enough indians. The way the business units are segregated, there was often unnecessary infighting.

    Advice to Management

lighten up, and either trust the people that work for you to do their job, or get rid of them. Cutting jobs and shipping them all overseas may increase the bottom line short term, but does nothing for the quality of your product, and even less for the few unlucky souls who now have to do 4 peoples jobs due to downsizing.

    I worked at Maxim Integrated

    Pros

Used to have a good compensation package (if you were able to cash out) Used to have good people and a level of comaraderie Used to be a prideful place to work

    Cons

It's amazing how fast a company can take a severe nosedive. Maxim has done it in spades. It was struggling under Jack Gifford. When he left, new mgmnt. drove the company into the ground. There is no top down direction to speak of. Upper management seems to be pilaging the coffers while not doing anything to distribute the company's profits to the employees any longer. Layoffs have wrecked morale and placed even more pressure on those remaining to bear the larger burden which serves, again, to lower morale further. Still a VERY political place to work where successes aren't acknowledged much less rewarded. Nepotism still rampant. For some reason, despite the round after round of layoff, virtually none of the upper management or middle management has been let go, and this was arguably the group that needed to be purged the most. People that are there seem to simply wait to take the next best employment opportunity that comes along just to get out from under it. What a mess...what a shame.

    Advice to Management

Most companies purge evenly from top to bottom. You have purged almost exlusively from the bottom which makes no sense and leads to an upside down pyramid of a workforce. People need incentive - it's not that good of a place to work in it's own right. Keep laying off and outsourcing and the word on the street's gonna come back to bite you.
