    Pros

    Provides opportunities to
Learn particular skill sets, eligible for overtime, flexible work hours, good job to break into industry coming out of school

    Cons

Limited room for advancement, average wage below industry standard, management is not proactive - mainly reactionary to staff needs, life balance can be an issue at times

    Advice to Management

Need to find the time to hear and address staff needs. Treat them like your clients.

I worked at Maxxam Analytics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great colleagues mostly. My own department was a great group.
Minimum experience required to get an interview.
Most people interviewed will get the job.
Benefits are decent, vacation time.. not so much.
If your good at 'looking busy' you will excel even if that requires taking naps during your shift.
Lots of cross training in down time... which is good if you are given adequate time to complete.
Laboratory Managers and Supervisors are very approachable for most departments.
The experience gained here will get you a better job so keep searching.
    Quality overall is very good.

    Cons

The salary is ridiculously low for anyone starting $14-$16 hourly
The company like to tell all the poor employees how rich they have made them and in return the employee's get a maxxam logo water bottle or a pasta lunch once/twice a year.
Lack of staff in the lab and throughout the company puts serious stress on those working there.
The work of three people is forced upon one person and the results must be produced on time without over time... unrealistic!
Finger pointing plays a big role when problems occur, instead of being proactive and fixing the problems before they become an issue.
Progression is slim to none once you become good, fast and efficient at a station.
The harder you work the more you are taken for granted.
Life outside of work is not an option in busy periods.
Taking your vacation is so so so restricted.(imagine wanting to take both weeks vacation together).
Pay Rise you say? You mean pay cuts!

    Advice to Management

Award those who work hard with pay rises and not those who you favour or those who threaten to leave. Too many managers not enough analysts. Stretching people to their breaking point does not fall on the supervisor it's the upper level management who ignore this that should take the blame and make a change. Appreciate those loyal employees who give up their personal lives to ensure you get your bonus at the end of the year.

I have been working at Maxxam Analytics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Some of the people at Maxxam are excellent. You spend so much time together working overtime, they start to feel like family. Which is good because you'll never see your real family, you will be at work so much.

    Cons

Very very low pay, even with all the overtime
Promotions and pay raises are non existent
Unrealistic expectations regarding sample volumes because of inadequate staffing
Poorly maintained instrumentation causing stress to those who are expected to run them
Managers favour certain departments over other
You have managers of managers of managers of supervisors, but they won't hire a single analyst to help you in the lab
Upper management are disrespectful and talk over you if they don't like what you're saying
They expect you to study outside of work unpaid in order to help them pass an external audit

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees enough to survive in the current economy
Hire more people so your staff don't all snap and quit one day

    Pros

may be good for new graduates/immigrants for a short while, place to meet new friends.

    Cons

Low pay, minimum advancement, political, do not appreciate employees hard work, bad management, bureaucratic.

    Advice to Management

All your talented workers have worked for you for only a short while and left for other consultants and companies, have you wondered why? Maxxam retention rate of talented people is extremely low, everyone else that stays are mediocre or ready for retirement.

    Pros

Basically the only company hiring now.

    Cons

Maxxam hires several people at once and puts them in random roles in the company which is not based on experience or education at all. You can have people with masters degrees pushing samples to the labs full time and people with 2 year technical diplomas starting in instrumentation and analysis. Maxxam doesn't care, as long as they get these positions filled. If you excel at one of these lower roles (which isn't that hard, I've seen coworkers take 3 hour breaks before with no negative repercussions). Then you will be stuck in that position with no advancement, even if an internal position opens up, they would rather hire someone new than move you, because it would "upset the balance of the departments".
Pay is extremely low. Around $16/h starting and once you get stuck in one of these positions, that's all you will be making with no chance of ever getting a raise.
Most of my coworkers tell me that they're only at Maxxam for 1-2 years, just for experience and until someone else hires them.
Management doesnt care about work life balance at all. They will take on several oil spills at once, and purposely don't hire enough staff. So everyone (except management) is expected to work 50-60 hours a week. Even if they have family or other social obligations.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. Give them a reason to stay at Maxxam, including advancement and opportunities, don't pigeonhole them into one low level position forever. Mediocrity shouldn't win. You best employees shouldn't be the ones struggling to advance in the company.
Work life balance is important for everyone. Not just management.

I worked at Maxxam Analytics (Less than a year)

    Pros

Only worked here with fixed end dates, so can' comment on full time work. Management was very reasonable. Any overtime was optional and paid. Lots of staff events.

    Cons

Not always the best paid roles

    Pros

Coworkers are friendly and usually quite helpful. In addition there are decent opportunities to learn and gain experience in a laboratory environment.

    Cons

Heavy workload, many hours of overtime ( expected not requested), lack of organisation in some departments, pay/ compensation should be higher for the type of work required.

    Pros

Lots of learning in the few couple of years of working. Great learning environment. Free hot coffee in the lunch area. Lots of interaction with people. If you're lucky you might get a chance to get a full-time position with the company. Lots of positions available once you're in the company.

    Cons

Low pay, lots of repetitive work. A lot of heavy lifting coolers. Hand cramps from repetitive signing Chain of Custodies. Benefits don't start until 12 months after contract. Managers will try anything to no give overtime. Long hours.

    Advice to Management

Recognize your employees more. Payroll is almost as bad a minimum wage.

I have been working at Maxxam Analytics full-time

    Pros

Very good place to earn a footing in the type of work involved. More opportunities to move once an employee.

    Cons

Very bad management decisions that only look at short term benefits (usually not in the best interest of employees, just for profit/upper management). Shows in high turnover. Salary is decent. Hard to expect any changes so people have given up on and just move on.

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees and their needs (not only in terms of financial compensation). Lots of excess spending that could be better utilized. Opportunities should not be based on favorites and more dependent on results produced.
