I worked at Maxxam Analytics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great colleagues mostly. My own department was a great group.
Minimum experience required to get an interview.
Most people interviewed will get the job.
Benefits are decent, vacation time.. not so much.
If your good at 'looking busy' you will excel even if that requires taking naps during your shift.
Lots of cross training in down time... which is good if you are given adequate time to complete.
Laboratory Managers and Supervisors are very approachable for most departments.
The experience gained here will get you a better job so keep searching.
    Quality overall is very good.

    Cons

The salary is ridiculously low for anyone starting $14-$16 hourly
The company like to tell all the poor employees how rich they have made them and in return the employee's get a maxxam logo water bottle or a pasta lunch once/twice a year.
Lack of staff in the lab and throughout the company puts serious stress on those working there.
The work of three people is forced upon one person and the results must be produced on time without over time... unrealistic!
Finger pointing plays a big role when problems occur, instead of being proactive and fixing the problems before they become an issue.
Progression is slim to none once you become good, fast and efficient at a station.
The harder you work the more you are taken for granted.
Life outside of work is not an option in busy periods.
Taking your vacation is so so so restricted.(imagine wanting to take both weeks vacation together).
Pay Rise you say? You mean pay cuts!

    Advice to Management

Award those who work hard with pay rises and not those who you favour or those who threaten to leave. Too many managers not enough analysts. Stretching people to their breaking point does not fall on the supervisor it's the upper level management who ignore this that should take the blame and make a change. Appreciate those loyal employees who give up their personal lives to ensure you get your bonus at the end of the year.

I have been working at Maxxam Analytics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Some of the people at Maxxam are excellent. You spend so much time together working overtime, they start to feel like family. Which is good because you'll never see your real family, you will be at work so much.

    Cons

Very very low pay, even with all the overtime
Promotions and pay raises are non existent
Unrealistic expectations regarding sample volumes because of inadequate staffing
Poorly maintained instrumentation causing stress to those who are expected to run them
Managers favour certain departments over other
You have managers of managers of managers of supervisors, but they won't hire a single analyst to help you in the lab
Upper management are disrespectful and talk over you if they don't like what you're saying
They expect you to study outside of work unpaid in order to help them pass an external audit

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees enough to survive in the current economy
Hire more people so your staff don't all snap and quit one day

I worked at Maxxam Analytics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

may be good for new graduates/immigrants for a short while, place to meet new friends.

    Cons

Low pay, minimum advancement, political, do not appreciate employees hard work, bad management, bureaucratic.

    Advice to Management

All your talented workers have worked for you for only a short while and left for other consultants and companies, have you wondered why? Maxxam retention rate of talented people is extremely low, everyone else that stays are mediocre or ready for retirement.

I have been working at Maxxam Analytics full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Friendly people.
    - Free parking.
    - Union workplace (BC only)
    - Good dental & extended health package.
    - Sales department has no quotas or sales targets, almost impossible to get fired from there regardless of underperformance.

    Cons

    - Completely profit driven management.
    - Goals are very short term and only focus on showing a profitable month or fiscal quarter.
    - Employees are disposable, no value in experience or expertise. Want only low wage button pushers who can sometimes follow instructions.
    - Job titles are not to be taken literally, responsibilities or blame are frequently dumped on others.
    - H.R. are pretty much the companys lawyers there to misinterpret the bargaining agreement to the companys benefit.
    - Company intentionally understaffs to boost profit to please parent company.
    - Positive glowing reviews of Maxxam on Glassdoor are 100% management propaganda posts, totally laughible.
    - Day to day lab work is a nitemare of bureacratic bs preventing productivity and innovation.
    - Heavy with ineffectual middle managers.
    - Almost no support staff.
    - Any actual science that happens feels accidental and out of place.
    - Basically a factory.

    Advice to Management

You can have a profitable lab or an effective lab, not both. Maxxam has gone too hard on the former and the science and people are suffering.

I have been working at Maxxam Analytics full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Strong company, good values. Good benefit plan with Day of Caring programs and RRSP and DPSP options. Employee recognition platforms and appreciation events.

    Cons

Very poor management at supervisor level and lack of communication from senior management. Outdated SOP's and processes make daily tasks very tedious. No room to grow within the company, and preference is hiring outside temps on short term contracts instead of promoting from within.

    Advice to Management

Closely review employee morale to identify issues with high turnover. Focus on lack of leadership at supervisory levels.

    Pros

    Provides opportunities to
Learn particular skill sets, eligible for overtime, flexible work hours, good job to break into industry coming out of school

    Cons

Limited room for advancement, average wage below industry standard, management is not proactive - mainly reactionary to staff needs, life balance can be an issue at times

    Advice to Management

Need to find the time to hear and address staff needs. Treat them like your clients.
