I worked at Mayo Clinic full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Exposure to complex clinical situations; nursing staff is invested in their role in patient care and advocacy. Fair compensation. Free CEU in-house.

    Cons

Management and nursing staffing office consider nurses to be interchangeable widgets on a schedule with vacancies, constantly changing from day/night shift multiple times a week. There is no such thing as a work life balance if you are a staff nurse. There are many "staff satisfaction" surveys, though it would seem that little is done to improve the declining morale among nursing...

      Pros

Small facility, staff and directors were excellent---really listened to your ideas and helped implement them.

      Cons

A shift of 4 ten hour days vs. 8 hr. with 5 days would provide a better work life balance.

I have been working at Mayo Clinic full-time for more than 10 years

      Pros

Great benefits and pay. Most units have good managers, but a few do not.

      Cons

Expectations and wages are different depending on which site you work at despite attempts to consolidate. Like all hospitals, it is cutting staff and expects more from staff despite sicker patients. Some managers have enough support for a good work /life balance while others are extremely overworked.

      Advice to Management

Treatall sites equally with patient and staff expectations.

I have been working at Mayo Clinic full-time

      Pros

Everything, great work life balance, amazing support from management, and assistance in professional and personal development.

      Cons

Easy to get lost in the size of the organization, however, this can be avoided through outreach and networking.

      Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Mayo Clinic full-time for less than a year

      Pros

Very flexible work environment, great work life balance, great benefits, competitive pay for the location, prioritizes patient care above all else

      Cons

Negative employee morale, unorganized leadership, zero transparency, no formal training, zero communication between separate departments, very inefficient processes, level of understanding of subordinate jobs by upper management is very poor, no new employee on boarding, unethical management operationally, the list goes on...

      Advice to Management

LISTEN to your employees & be proactive!!! Work on ethical and efficient processes/policy adherence. Be a LEADER. Engage with your employees. TREAT YOUR EMPLOYEES WITH THE SAME STANDARD YOU STRIVE FOR WITH YOUR PATIENTS.

I worked at Mayo Clinic full-time

      Pros

They foster learning and growth. Always on the cutting edge. More progressive than most hospitals and lots of resources at your fingertips to make your job more efficient and enjoyable.

      Cons

Bad work/life balance, a recent increase of nurse-to-patient ratio. Mayo has high expectations of the nurses to go above and beyond, but the increase in patient ratio makes this very difficult. High stress due to patient complexity and acuity. Every nurse is expected to float.
