I worked at Mazda North American Operations full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

While working at Mazda, I came across many great coworkers. The products are great. The work-life balance is ideal and the benefits are top notch. The lease allowance is a nice perk, too.

    Cons

The company seems to lack a clear direction. It is harder to gain experience in different areas of the company as there is very little rotation. As a result, it is also difficult to get a promotion. It is very easy to become mediocre and simply go to work just to collect a paycheck.

    Advice to Management

Help hard-working individuals grow. Offer opportunities to rotate employees so they learn different areas of the business. Leverage each employees strengths with jobs where they can apply their skills and training.

I worked at Mazda North American Operations (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Great people to work with for the most part
-Company paid trips couple times a year
    -Good vehicle lease program
-Great history and culture at Mazda

    Cons

-The company is constantly changing direction
-Pay is not very good and salary increases are nominal
-If you want to be promoted, you have to be willing to relocate
-Huge disconnect between corporate and the regions, and between regions and the field
-Serious lack of communication at all levels

    Advice to Management

-It starts with having the right people and keeping the right people

I have been working at Mazda North American Operations full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The benefits are good, money for a company lease, medical, etc.

The pay is not high, but it is in the ballpark for a given position. In general, the lower your position level, the better the pay is relative to other jobs.

The bonuses more than make up for the lower pay and the company never changes the goal if it looks as if it will be met. If anything they give a larger bonus if the goal is exceeded. If you don't meet the goal, you get a reduced bonus, not zero.

    Cons

Leadership is lacking, everything is reactive and rarely proactive.

There is a huge disconnect between management and reality.

    Advice to Management

Go talk to employees. The MC CEO toured the MNAO facilities and talked to employees. Why is that not true of the US executives? What's up with that? Don't take middle management's word for it, go walk "the factory floor" now and then.

I have been working at Mazda North American Operations full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great Benefits (Car allowance, twice a year bonus, early release during the summer), They are still building up from their last round of lay offs a few years ago and it's a good chance to get your foot in and move forward.

    Cons

There is a weird underlying "thing" i can't put my finger on. Between the people who have been around through the lay off and the new people. A lot of job protecting and people aren't willing to work together for fear they might get the axe!

    Advice to Management

Work on opening up the communication between all of the departments. Especially between the Japanese side and American side. Be more flexible to change.

I worked at Mazda North American Operations full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Plenty of work when the plant was open, can work on the problems that are most urgent, most of the time.

    Cons

Direct manager / supervisor may not know your job or can give any advise on how to solve / address the problem. Management changed constantly with 6 reorganizations in 8 years. Forget about regular raises, you may get 5% in 3-4 years total. New hires get more than current employees.

    Advice to Management

Mold a concrete business plan and stick with it. Do not get rid of all of the quality people and then think that you can easily replace them. You do not go into launch mode with no Quality department or with all new employees.

    Cons

    -no training for new employees
-HR department is more of a hinderance than a help
    -old building
    -not enough parking

    Advice to Management

Give employees chance to review their managers to identify poor leadership within the company.

Great Benifits, Family to work - 8 and out

    Cons

Zero Training. HR is in California and does not participate AT ALL in Flat Rock unless they have to.

    Advice to Management

Engage more with the employees and try not to be so arrogant

    Pros

Very collegial place to work, with a real sense of mission. Lots of fun times there. Some excellent VP/C level managers who really know the industry and help people move around and broaden skills.

    Cons

HR is horrible. They look for excuses to let people go, and encourage people to leave the company rather than try to work with them on their careers (I left for a better job elsewhere, was not broomed).

Pay not comensurate with California real estate prices, or rest of industry.

    Advice to Management

Restructure your HR team. Remember, they are there to fulfill payroll and benefits. They have no strategic function.
