I have been working at McAfee full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good work life balance
    Some nice perks and programs

    Cons

Hypocritical messages about employee empowerment (talk a lot but don't walk the talk).
Underlying sexism in culture - not overt but it's absolutely there
    Can't get anything done
Way too much top down decision making

    Advice to Management

If you want the culture and results you say you do, behavior needs to change starting at the top. Employees are smarter than you think

I have been working at McAfee full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Overall, nice and friendly people to work with
    - Nice building
    - Might be a good place for a new developer to get his feet wet, then move on
    - Large, well known company, decent products
    - Owned by Intel
    - Dev teams collaborate well

    Cons

    - Large, well known company, that is slowly falling behind
    - No concept of team building within the dev group. Managers do not interact with the employees much (only to criticize).
    - A lot of meetings about meetings
    - Below average pay
    - Minimal training opportunities. Very stingy on the budgets for training, etc.
    - Minimal, if any, recognition for a job well done. They WILL, however, let you know when you screw up.
    - Extremely poor project planning
    - Antiquated hardware and software for development (interestingly, the spreadsheet-reading managers always have the latest laptops, though)
    - Dev managers have no decision making power. They must ask for approval for everything. They seem to just care about their own self with no regards to the people reporting to them. We are all just warm bodies.
    - Dev managers do not know the meaning of "how to motivate employees" (nor do they care), nor the meaning of "accountability".

    Advice to Management

    - You have too many dev managers that seemingly do nothing. In fact, too many managers period.
    - You should also do less talking about what you're going to do to improve things, and actually do it!

I worked at McAfee full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Free sodas and a ping pong game room. Healthcare benefits are very average, and they cover most of the major holidays with time off.

    Cons

    - Disrespectful and unqualified inside sales management team from management
    - Lazy managers who walk around telling jokes and socializing all day while you do their work for them
    - Low pay in comparison to the local market
    - Very frustrating work environment because most processes are broken so everything has a one off work around that you must get approval for
    - No leadership or guidance from the Inside sales Management team because they don't know how to lead. Most are in over their heads in their role at McAfee.
    - Executive Managers prey upon young girls in Inside Sales and Channels
    - Very lacking in real career opportunities unless you are part of the boys club or one of the pretty girls who catches the eye of the executives
    - Low performers and the most mediocre people are promoted because they are well liked and network well. The spend their time networking instead of actually working.
    - Fluffed and absolutely falsified data is used to sell internal employees on what a great place McAfee is. There is a constant barrage of messaging and spin about McAfee internally that is based on bad data that would get most people arrested for publicizing.
    - They preach about a work life balance however inside sales will be working on Christmas Eve this year and the day after Christmas while all the execs and many Directors will be home with their families.
    - The culture in inside sales is very low class and unprofessional. It reminds me of that movie "Boiler Room" where everyone is tatted up, coked up and dialing for dollars on the phone.
    - The office workplace is horrible. Very low open walls, everyone can hear what everyone else is saying on the phone. There is zero privacy and professionalism there. Its so loud some days that you can't concentrate on your work.
McAfee is losing market share across all products and Geo's. The previous CEO cut costs to the bone to make McAfee more attractive to a prospective buyer and R&D has really suffered.

    Advice to Management

Management from Intel should come in and clean house and fire all sales management. It's an absolute disaster there.

    Pros

There are some nice people there. Free parking.

    Cons

Santa Clara office is in a poor location. Forget about taking a train to the office or a cush shuttle. We don't have those. What we do have is a vacuum at the top level that has liquidated engineering resources to the point that the company can't release a product that is innovative. Marketing is completely hamstrung with archaic systems. The web site doesn't even have a content management system. The company is full of slackers that have sat in their grey cubs for years doing nothing. Pay is awful. Company is going downhill fast.

    Advice to Management

    Reorg
    Pay people better
    Give employees leeway to innovate

I worked at McAfee full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    good benefits and smart people

    Cons

An "eat your young" environment has gradually taken over since the Intel acquisition. It's become completely non supportive and an aggressively negative place to be. Lots of pressure from Intel on new products has created a constant sense of panic that results in poor behavior at the leadership level. Complete mismanagement of headcount quarter to quarter persists and results in a persistent hire-then fire process.

    Advice to Management

Take care of bullying managers from the top down. They are slowly poisoning the culture. With so much opportunity in high tech A players are unlikely to stick around for the abuse.

    Pros

McAfee will hire anyone for inside sales positions even if you have no experience. You can come here, get experience and then leave for one of the competitors nearby and make a lot more money. If you do a really average to poor job at McAfee they'll promote you to management.

    Cons

Terrible inside sales management team. They are just a joke and most sit around a better part of the day joking around with each other, not working, not helping and being another obstacle to hurdle while you try to make your unrealistic quota. We have people hired to be sales mentors and coaches and all they do is talk about football and rock bands all day.

    Advice to Management

Intel you should take a hard look at what's going on in Plano with your inside sales teams. It's crazy to me that it has been allowed to go on like this for so long, even with so many poor reviews posted. There is a reason McAfee has become a people machine with high turnover.

I have been working at McAfee full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There's a gym on-site and a decent cafeteria. They have really fast internet access in the office.

    Cons

Systems are just archaic: BI and data are a joke: wireless internet access is a mess inside building; dunces are in mid-level mgmt and up positions. No one is empowered to make decisions that are new and breakthrough. It's just an awful place to be. Don't do it. This is a declining business. Security might be "hot" but not this company. If you're interviewing ask the hiring mgrs how much has the company invested in innovation and research? All the profits go into sales. The "president" is a geriatric man that's completely out of touch with accounts, industry, technology. He thinks he can BS his way in anything. Hey, it's worked so far--only thing is the market has changed. No women in any meaningful positions.

    Advice to Management

Fire 50%+ of your directors, senior directors, VPs and C-staff.
Hire new talent external to the company.
Hire some executive women--no not executive admins.

    Pros

You get to learn enterprise products and experience the corporate environment

    Cons

    Cronyism and lots of opportunities
For growth through having outside-of-the-office relationships with decision makers.
Terrible work environment and sales and techs that buddy up can not meet their quotas and keep their position and get promoted.

    Advice to Management

Join the buddy system and do everything what upper mgmt wants. Dont feel sorry about other people being treated unfairly to be successful.

Nice selection of holidays to take time off

    Cons

Managers don't help. They sit around with each other screwing around a lot, telling jokes and making a stressful workplace even worse.

    Advice to Management

Intel should lay off most of the existing inside sales management and promote people who really want to work and contribute to the company and their paycheck
