There are no real negatives that are specific to this firm that are not encountered at any other mid-size to large firm in the city.

    I worked at McCarter full-time

    Pros

There's a reason why the name McCarter & English carries the level of respect it does. You work with the best and can really learn a lot.

    Cons

The compensation is nowhere near enough for the work, billable and non-billable, you are expected to do.

I have been working at McCarter full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are decent and the attorneys are nice professional. Secretarial staff is helpful when needing to understand how to do something. I contact the support center and IT (applications department) when I want to know how to do something

    Cons

We were told that what we learn would count against our review. Over the past 3 years, we have received little to no training. The training we're getting now is mediocre. The training department is horrible!

    Advice to Management

Advance people that can help us do better at our jobs. Managers should not be training. If the trainer is watching the manager train all the time then we are in deep trouble!! Encourage the people who are doing the training to be professional. No one cares about your personal life.

Communication between Headquarters and offices could be better.

    Advice to Management

Communication could be better. Hopefully this has improved.

I have been working at McCarter full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Management is approachable
There has been a conscientious effort to improve employee morale
Employees are held to a high standard, white glove service for internal and external clients
    Hard work is rewarded

    Cons

Raise & Bonus structure should be revisited for Staff
Rumor mill needs to be quelled

    Advice to Management

There are rabble rousers within the Firm that need to be dealt with more adequately. They create problems where there are none and can lead to employee morale issues. Even looking at reviews here, it is clear to see who the disgruntled employees, and former employees, are. It doesn't take much to figure it out.

Like any organization M&E has it's good and bad points, but, in this author's opinion, the good far outweigh the bad. From an administrative perspective I have been satisfied with the management provided. Opportunities to learn and advance are always welcomed and, while the workload can be demanding, there are a lot of advantages as well (flex hours, etc.) The Firm does go out of its way to let staff know they are appreciated (excellent vacation time, a good number of paid holidays compared to my counterparts at other firms, employee appreciation day, ice cream socials, holiday parties, etc.) Some gripe about recent management changes, that's always going to be the case, but I for one have seen an improvement in morale and productivity since the changes have occurred. I believe some are not happy because previous (low) performance and (poor) behavior is no longer accepted.

M&E is a good place to be, you will not dread going to work every day.

    I worked at McCarter full-time

    Pros

there are no pros at all

    Cons

Training and management departments were horrible. The HR department doesn't support you at all. Very controlling and no chance for any kind of advancement. Highly recommend anyone thinking of working at McCarter should look elsewhere. The DC office cannot even be described here just beware.

    Advice to Management

You need to revamp your HR and training departments.

I worked at McCarter (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Friendly work environment and people

    Cons

I was just an intern so I was not there long enough to experience anything truly negative. The only thing I didn't like was parking across the street everyday which cost me $10 per day. Maybe you get a better place to park when you get hired full-time

I have been working at McCarter full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Right now I'm not sure there are any.

    Cons

Our administrative staff is in shambles. Our Finance Department has had so many changes that I don't know who to call any more. Our HR Department had an interim director for a couple of years and I never heard of any complaints and things ran well from what I could see. They have now put someone in charge with not an ounce of HR experience or background. How does our management team justify their decisions?

    Advice to Management

Clean house by starting at the top. Senior management needs to sit with all members of our administrative staff and listen to what they have to say.
