I worked at McCarthy Building full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

McCarthy has a great culture. It is very "work hard, play hard." CEO is very down to earth and the rest of the company follows in his footsteps. Training is second to none in the construction industry. Company is very forward-thinking and proactive. Orientation is great to help employees get to know each other and really makes it feel like a family. ESOP is a great retirement benefit as well.

    Cons

    No cons really stick out.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.

I worked at McCarthy Building (More than 8 years)

    Pros

One of the best builders in the nation operationally. Also one of the safest due to an outstanding safety culture.

    Cons

Upper management preaches about creating a great work life balance but this balance is impossible with the amount of hours that you work.

Most of the folks that built the Southern California division into what it is today are no longer with the company either. The new wave of leadership is unproven and seems out of touch with their field staffs.

Too much upper management. The number of VP's and Directors continues to grow, while experienced field staff continues to leave the company.

    Advice to Management

Get back to what made McCarthy great - focusing on your people.

I have been working at McCarthy Building full-time

    Pros

I've been at McCarthy for less than a year, but it's felt like home since the day I started. The people are great from top down (CEO to interns)! The projects are interesting, exciting, fun and diverse. Benefits and compensation are competitive.

    Cons

Some of the systems could be streamlined and integrated, however progress is being made, so it's only a matter of time.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the Good Work!

    Pros

ESOP is a very nice perk. Can add up to a serious retirement account in 20+ years. Overall benefits package is good.

    Cons

As with any construction firm, work life balance is a challenge. Old school mentality in general. Not very progressive or open to change. Base salary is below average.

    Advice to Management

Provide greater flexibility in opportunities for change. Provide more clarity on career directions and lateral movement. Remove stigmas associated with certain business units.

    Pros

    Great benefits and retirement packages

    Cons

Not for anyone trying to have a family- they expect you to put work first and family second. If vice verse- then the ladder to a growth in career is cut short.

They also look at investing and promoting the newly hired rather than investing on the people who'd actually put their time and devotion into the work and company.

    Pros

As an intern you will get exposed to a lot of aspects of the construction field. The employees are willing to teach you the ropes.

    Cons

As a intern you are usually just given the task to post RFIs, give more responsibilities to the interns so that we can learn
