    Pros

Treated me fairly and there were opportunities to learn new skills and expand my experience.

    Cons

Quite simply, the news industry is changing at an extremely rapid pace and McClatchy is struggling to keep up, let alone get ahead of the change.

    Pros

There are a few good people in any company. This one is no exception to that rule. One can find good co-workers anywhere.

    Cons

The tangible bottom line is everything to this company. Years ago they took on much more debt than they could handle, and they've responded by selling as many assets and laying off as many people as they could. Now their game is to hire as many part-time people as they can so they don't have to pay benefits. They make one bad business decision upon another, then make the rank-and-file employees pay the awful price for them.

I worked at McClatchy full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Depends on the newsroom. Talented and experienced journalists and editors in many places. More autonomy for papers to cover their communities and maintain unique identities than other large newspaper chains. Credibility in the industry and really does attempt to "speak truth to power" when necessary.

    Cons

The cuts. The salary freezes. The lack of 401-K contributions. The worsening health insurance. The layoffs. The lack of new blood and manpower due to hiring freezes. News web sites with more pop-ups than any except porn sites.

    Advice to Management

Jeez. Where to begin? Your assets are your people. A 23-year-old college grad is cheaper than a 20-year veteran, but the difference in work shows - and the readers know it, too.
