I worked at McGraw-Hill Ryerson full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great work/life balance. Excellent benefits, pension and bonus structure when sales targets were met. I was fortunate to have very collaborative, inclusive and supportive managers that valued and encouraged the success of their subordinates. Hard-working staff and great company culture.

    Cons

Significant restructuring and staff cuts due to changes within the publishing industry as the company moved towards providing ebooks and digital content.

    Advice to Management

Never underestimate the value of support staff. Set your support staff up for success. Keep the lines of communication open between management and support staff. Value them as equals and encourage their input. There is a small cluster of management that treated support staff like minions and it really had a negative impact on moral, especially during the company transformation when support staff took on additional workloads and tasks with no increase in salary.

    Pros

    Free parking. Nice cafeteria staff.

    Cons

Management bullying, no employee HR support, boys club, very low salary, no opportunity, everyone is afraid to say anything in fear of losing their low paying jobs in a small bedroom community.

    Advice to Management

Get new management who has undergone management training and has proven people management experience.

I worked at McGraw-Hill Ryerson full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Autonomy and independence to set own schedule and own territory. Driven to promote digital and take risks in a traditionally risk adverse industry.

    Cons

Management "big brothering" sales, sales required to over communicate and over report which equates to less time in the field and the ability to actually sell.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the talent at your disposal and make use of it. Company has lost great people to the competition because of a narrow focus on cutting costs instead spend more on filing empty positions and training of new people.

I worked at McGraw-Hill Ryerson (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Coworkers who are family. Everyone helps each other out. They have surpassed other educational publishers in the eBook and testing platforms tenfold. Flex hours. Excellent location on the water. Access to the office 24/7 if you want it.

    Cons

Too many meetings. There are meetings about time management. There is no room for advancement if you are not already management. You need to leave the company and get more experience elsewhere for you to move up. If you apply for a job internally often your manager will not allow for you to move to the new job. Employees are terrified of who will be cut next in their next line of restructuring that has been going on for four years now.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees as they have some great advice and ways to improve company morale and better optimize processes.

    Pros

Concise and transparent mission, vision, strategic direction; improving: focus, organizational structure, infrastructure, communication, global inclusion and alignment, support for innovation.

    Cons

Not unique to MHE, but optimizing balance between near term and mid- term objectives as well as alignment on choices (what to stop doing) a continued challenge.

    Advice to Management

Balance pressure on management focus by quarterly results and near term ROI expectations. Give strategy time to evolve and bare fruit.

I worked at McGraw-Hill Ryerson full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It is a large enough company to offer decent benefits and perks. Management does not really know what is happening so you can get by without doing much. You just need to figure out which are the pet projects of the time and be vocally supportive, even if they do not make any sense at all. Flexible working hours.

    Cons

No clear sense of leadership. Promotions are not based on experience or merit, resulting in poor quality middle management with little knowledge of processes and best practices, no depth of experience to make good editorial decisions or sign on good authors which is important if you are a serious publisher.
