I have been working at McGraw-Hill full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Flexibility, Work life balance, great coworkers

    Cons

Yearly restructures and people being let go. Company dynamic is changing as MH shifts from publisher to eLearning. What we used to manage in publishing, we now also manage in eBooks, etc. Workload had greatly increased over past few years and management has turned a blind eye to it.

    Advice to Management

Stop eliminating positions while increasing number of product offerings and expecting better results.

I have been working at McGraw-Hill full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

McGraw Hill is a great place to work. The company is always looking for ways to improve employees work/life balance. Throughout my tenure, the senior management has changed several times but, the outcomes have only been a pleasant surprise.

    Cons

I cannot think of an issue that would need to be improved.

    I worked at McGraw-Hill full-time

    Pros

-People are awesome -Free food and drink -It's meaningful to work in education and you feel that there.

    Cons

-Health insurance sucks -Work-Life balance is a joke. Being called to work on a night or weekend was a weekly occurrence. -Insane deadlines are given with no serious input allowed from the technical teams on timelines. -Mangement is almost all middle aged white men, with huge egos and a tendency to only listen to their own opinions -Almost no opportunities to move up and most career building opportunities are denied (conferences, additional training) -Pay was well below market value and request for raises can take close to a year.

    Advice to Management

-Start listening to your employees. They're overworked and miserable. -Get your managers some training, or get new ones. The current ones are not advocating for their employees appropriately.

I have been working at McGraw-Hill full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The work life balance is very good, for the most part your schedule is flexible as long as you get your work done. MHE as a whole embraces open source technologies and has a lot of side projects that engineers can contribute to. Company match is good, health plans are decent. 3 week vacation is very nice. About 99% of the engineers I have encountered have been very talented and the people who work there are great people and have become my friends. CEO and CTO seem to care about the customers and provide engineers with what we need to succeed.

    Cons

Pay is slightly below market value, usually in good years the bonuses make up for the slightly below market pay, but in bad years the bonuses just don't do it. MHE needs to force all of their offices to embrace the overall company culture, some offices work in silos where they are their own company within MHE and career advancement is different from office to office depending on the management and their personal philosophies which is unfair.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of people who underperform, too many people are allowed to skate by because the company culture is a little too polite in calling out people who underperform. Make career development a bigger priority and force managers who are also engineers to focus less of their time programming and more of their time with managerial duties.

I have been working at McGraw-Hill full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

work-life balance good, middle management and rank-and-file workers are smart, professional, dedicated to teaching and learning

    Cons

No career pathway, no perks, unhealthy office (junk filled vending machines, cubicles, no filtered water, espresso, or free healthy food)

    Advice to Management

There is no management is there? Isn't Apollo just siphoning off as much money as they can with no long term plan for sustained corporation health? 9 out of 11 'senior' leadership roles are white men despite a real diversity and majority female work force who are highly educated and skilled.
