I worked at McKinsey & Company full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

+ People - both colleagues and most clients
+ Learning opps - both in terms of the consulting toolkit but also for the opportunity to get exposed to different industries, functions and geographies
+ Option value - great launching pad for career switching (pre-McK, I was in oil and gas in Houston, post-McK I'm in edtech in the Bay Area)
+ Alumni network - incredibly well-placed and people are actually super-responsive to asks for help
+ Brand recognition - helps in the jobs marketplace
+ Travel opps - if this is important to you

    Cons

    + Lifestyle - enough said
+ Success/failure at the Firm is highly dependent on luck -- a lot really depends on the luck of the draw with respect to staffing. You want to be staffed on the right project with the right team at the right time. The Firm does its best to give you a fair shot, but a fair number of people fall through the cracks.
+ Nature of consulting -- eventually you might get tired of providing advice and want to actually build stuff.
+ People are uber-rational -- in MBTI parlance, almost everyone is an ''NT". It creates a very logical / rational culture - you need to make sure you can fit into the culture.

    Advice to Management

Keep innovating to provide a strong value proposition to both clients and staff - not always an easy balance, but necessary given all of the disruption we're seeing in the consulting industry.

I have been working at McKinsey & Company (More than a year)

    Pros

Smart people, engaging work, lots of variety, pretty nice job perks (reimbursements, discounts, etc)

    Cons

long hours, regular travel (might be a perk for some, doesn't have to be a huge con if you negotiate well)

    Advice to Management

Cost of living in the Bay is painfully high - if you won't consider differentiated salaries, some sort of house-buying assistance would be a very positive gesture.

    Pros

Smart people, interesting problems, great training and development, exec level exposure, ability to make it what you want it to be

    Cons

Tough lifestyle at times, perpetual feedback can get grating if you aren't enjoying yourself, need a bit of luck to find the best place within the Firm for you

    Advice to Management

Continue emphasizing the reduced travel models - both clients and consultants benefit

I have been working at McKinsey & Company full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

great learning experience: analytical and problem solving skills, strategic management, executive level communication
exposure to top leadership in big companies
    challenging
    great people

    Cons

heavy workload, starts being very competitive once you make Associate Partner
Services therefore very dependent on clients' health and willingness to contract new projects
disconnected from real business impact, very internally focused

    Advice to Management

Put more efforts in helping and guiding new Associate Partners on the right path, really make it easier for working mothers (not just saying things but taking action), care more about people

I worked at McKinsey & Company full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Sets you up for your career, good mentorship by some senior partners, ability to take on work well ahead of others at similar tenures

    Cons

Work life balance cam be tough. Some partners have unrealistic expectations, often demanded by unrealistic clients who are paying top dollar and under much pressure themselves

    Advice to Management

Cut down fringe benefits like retreats, recruiting events in lieu of slightly higher headcount and larger teams to help with work life balance

I worked at McKinsey & Company full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Sharp people, fast pace, broad exposure, lots to do

    Cons

Internal politics get increasingly important with seniority, and often tangled with client politics. Role transitions from doing to selling over time, which can be less interesting.

    Advice to Management

Keep on keepin on. Great place to be, and a good fit for some long term.
