    Pros

Company is growing but not too big for itself.

I have been working at McMillen Jacobs Associates full-time

    Pros

Awesome staff, great culture, super technically competent. Projects are very, very interesting. Ambition and grabbing more project is almost always welcomed.

    Cons

Management thinks the staff is obtuse and tells some pretty blatant lies about stuff that "is to our benefit" but really is the company's bottom line protection. Promotion is rarely merit based. Obvious the merger was about one thing and one thing only - a 5 year path to resale and inflating the retirement of the higher ups. Cutting profit sharing, minimizing dividend distributions, minimizing bonuses, minimizing raises,...

    Advice to Management

Your staff isn't stupid. It's insulting to lie to us so obviously. Quit cutting benefits. Quit marginalizing the hardest workers. Hire staff that's appropriate for the number of management we have. 200 associates and 15 staff people is not the real number, but it certainly feels like the company is extremely top heavy. Poor recruiting and lack of foresight (quarter to quarter) mindset isn't getting us anywhere...

I worked at McMillen Jacobs Associates full-time

    Pros

Good reputation, opportunity to work with industry leaders, decent enough benefits

    Cons

Managers do not hold employees accountable for their actions, very poor communication, slow to respond to inquiries, made me feel like I was just a warm body filling a position rather than a valued member of a team

I have been working at McMillen Jacobs Associates full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Fun projects. Great teams to work with. Good clients. Design-build company with a great sense of purpose. I've worked at McMillen Jacobs for over 5 years. McMillen LLC and Jacobs Associates merged together, and the results have been good so far. The CEO and Engineering Manager are fun people.

    Cons

My design teams are divided among different offices, so coordination takes more effort. Fine points of the merger between McMillen LLC and Jacobs Associates are still being resolved.

I have been working at McMillen Jacobs Associates full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    1) Still many technically strong people 2) Company still a top operator in the tunneling market 3) Good financial performance (disclosure: I'm a stock holder, but with a very very minor share) 4) Flexibility for good work-life balance (this depends on your office, though) 5) Management has been responsive and supportive of my diverse professional development interests 6) Most offices have a fun culture and happy...

    Cons

    1) Strange double standards regarding promotions (some people move up earlier than others with questionable justification) 2) I don't agree with company's position on equating years of education vs years of experience (spoiler - I think education is unfairly overcompensated) 3) McMillen side has largely taken over company operations, and the old "employees first" JA culture that successfully retained lots of talented...

    Advice to Management

    1) Get a business plan together for the legacy JA work, or you'll lose people. 2) Increase management's visibility to offices outside Pacific NW and California. 3) Make it more "McMillen Jacobs Associates" instead of "McMillen with some Jacobs Associates People"

      Disapproves of CEO

I worked at McMillen Jacobs Associates full-time

      Pros

Fun culture, locally within the offices

      Cons

I don't need to list many - the other "negative" reviews spell it out pretty well. They are all fairly spot-on and it looks like the situation hasn't improved since I left the firm.

      Advice to Management

My review is really just a wake-up call to the management. I worked at the firm for over five years and am no longer with the firm. I wish this firm nothing but success, but if the management team can't see what's happening, I don't know how it's going to change the course and steer in the right direction. Management - please communicate better with your staff and pay attention to the negative reviews posted on...

I have been working at McMillen Jacobs Associates full-time

      Pros

Excellent staff throughout company. Interesting projects. Good pay.

      Cons

High-stress environment, heavy on internal politics, and plagued by nepotism. There are no pathways to success unless you are related to management. Unqualified family members/spouses in leadership roles. These managers micromanage to cover up their inexperience or are not approachable.

      Advice to Management

Provide leadership training for all managers. Poor leadership is chasing away good people. Don’t play favorites. Stop gossiping about your employees to other staff. It breeds distrust. Don’t post fake reviews on Glassdoor. Instead, turn your attention to fixing the problems in our company.

I have been working at McMillen Jacobs Associates full-time

      Pros

Technical staff work on challenging projects. People help each other, whether it's project related or donating PTO hours to help a fellow employee to focus on their health. Hard work is recognized and rewarded. Management has developed excellent client relationships to retain work and new project opportunities.

      Cons

Some merger items remain an issue and can cause a strain on resources. There's still some confusion on our brand and message, 2 years post merger.

      Advice to Management

This review is my own and is an honest account of my time with the organization. With any employer there will be peaks and valleys. My advice, focus on merger related issues and find a solution sooner than later.

I worked at McMillen Jacobs Associates for more than 8 years

      Pros

      Good benefits and good pay.

      Cons

McMillen LLC, a husband and wife run company with a 10 year history, merged with Jacobs Associates, an employee owned firm with a 60 year history. Complete culture clash. The merger was sprung upon Jacobs Associates stock holders who had no other choice but to vote yes on the merger. The merger was not properly vetted and no management firm was brought in to make sure the transition was a smooth one. Top talent from Jacobs...
