I have been working at Mechdyne full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

As a full time employee who has been employed for a number of years I can say that working here has refreshed my body and mind. As a company that has experienced rapid growth over the past years I have come to the belief this is one of the better AV/IT companies to work for. Yes, they are demanding, but on the other hand the rewards greatly outweigh what other other companies lack. I have nothing but positive experiences working here.

    Cons

Might want to consider having employees be given actual sick days instead of having to use their vacation days, etc.

    Pros

Not a bad job for starting out in your career. Travel us a bonus. Some managers are very good as well.

    Cons

Pay is a bit low compared to other companies, raise that and you will get better employees applying and current will be more motivated. Also extremely long hours for no overtime for some employees is demeaning.

    Pros

Great involvement of the leadership group in decision making. Work internationally on customized solutions with large companies, universities, etc. See the world with your job.

    Cons

Lots of travel. Bottteneck in decision making at times.

I have been working at Mechdyne full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You get to travel alot - see different places and work with new technology

    Cons

You really are treated badly by management - You are just a means to an end. You may get to travel but often spend most of the day on a plane and are then expected to work a full day! Travelling time is not 'work' time so not paid. Also expenses are not paid very often so with alot of travelling you find your funds running out quickly and you can get in trouble for asking for these back early! - top tip for mechdyne - if you want people to pay in country for everything - give them a company credit card - Do not rely on their own funds as some have families to support!

    Advice to Management

As above - You expect too much from people - maybe when hiring you need to be clearer on how much work you expect . Career ladder is a joke - I completed my next level to be given some excuse of why I was not given a promotion... Salary is also a massive joke in the industry.

Thank your for your review.  Frequent positive feedback that we receive from teammates is the ability to travel and see different places around the world.  With that being said, all teammates are ... More

I have been working at Mechdyne full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of training, reliable schedule with opportunities for overtime, career growth potential, competitive compensation, profit sharing, good benefits. A company culture that cares about and counts on input from all employes. Executive leadership takes the time to meet with all new employees to get to know them and discuss company history, values, and culture.

    Cons

Long hiring process (although they do a pretty good job of selecting good coworkers). Depending on your location or assignment the environment can be stressful.

    Advice to Management

Continue to try to bridge the gap between the home office and remote sites.

I have been working at Mechdyne part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The employees at Mechdyne are great to work with. Everyone is very friendly and willing to help out wherever they can. Teammates are spread out throughout the world providing different insights and experiences to every project. Although they are head-quartered in Marshalltown, IA, they have many employees who work from their home office. The support and flexibility is great. No week is ever the same so the experience gained can be exceptional.

    Cons

Workload can be heavy and unrealistic at times, but I have found that to be true at other successful organizations as well.

I worked at Mechdyne (More than a year)

    Pros

They had potential...but the loss and firing/laying off of employees is a standard there.

    Cons

You always have to watch your back because it is a very close knit group out of Marshaltown and if you don't fit even after all the testing you will be gone. They say they value you but in the end...they really don't. Mechdyne burns through people...except for the original founders and engineers who all went to college together. I left a good job with a Public Company with good benefits to take a job with Mechdyne and they let me go with no reason at all. No bad performance review at all.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating people like "Cattle" since that is your favorite meal in Iowa. People matter and when you promise the world and then "screw" with people's ability to provide for their families you have done a grave disservice.

    I worked at Mechdyne full-time

    Pros

The opportunity to travel to far-away, and sometimes exotic places was certainly a benefit of working for certain departments. You can also expense nearly any sort of office or commute equipment you need- good CAD mouse, laptop backpack, and other items of that nature.

    Cons

    Extremely unrealistic deadlines.

    Misleading hiring practices

Promotions and projects seemed to not be based on merit

The pay is horrible, and the benefits (insurance, 401k) do not make up for it.

You are worked to the bone when travelling. 12-14 hour days are common on-site, and these include Saturdays and Sundays sometimes.

Gossip. Oh, dear, the gossip was bad.

When you expense an item, they deduct it from your taxes. This makes it difficult to track your monthly income.

    Advice to Management

Stop placing so much weight on those personality tests. Pay your people better. Allow a better work-life balance.

    I worked at Mechdyne full-time

    Pros

    - The people are great
    - Excellent benefits. Health and dental are very good and are very inexpensive
    - Generous profit sharing, 401K
    - The work is challenging
    - Recognized and rewarded for hard work
    - Work is varied, no day is the same

    Cons

    - Software division is in VA Beach, and can feel disconnected from the main HQ in Iowa.
    - Questionable long term growth options up to and above Sr level developer
    - Work can be very difficult, and customers demands can be unrealistic
    - Customer needs/requests drive development, so the long term vision for the product(s) is sometimes unclear
    - Travel is frequent and typically on short/no notice
    - Base salary is below market average

    Advice to Management

    - Plan installations/travel better to avoid long days on client site
    - Develop a deeper backlog of product features/enhancements so customer demands don't drive development
    - Realize that it is OK to say "no" to the customer. Customers are often wrong.

I have been working at Mechdyne full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Mechdyne has some really innovativeand technical people. Previously the focus was on delivering high end and complex AV systems but the scope has broadened to general AV and enterprise wide technologies. Mechdyne is seeing substantial growth particularly in the Oil and Gas Market as customers are looking for higher quality and well supported systems. Its good to have readily accessible support within the company to assist with customer concerns in both IT and AV.
All systems are fully staged and tested prior to being delivered so there is a noticeable difference in quality for customers and less stress onsite for the team.

    Cons

Headquartered in Iowa and really the center of the Mechdyne world. Not as large as the big AV companies who can receive larger discounts from manufacturers and sometimes offer lower prices.

    Advice to Management

Continue with the strategy of putting the customer first. Mechdyne's values are the core of our identity and earn respect in the industry.
Further investment in regional offices to service customers would help minimize costs.
