I worked at MedImmune full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Some of the best scientists around (If only the management would listen to them)
Within some groups there is great teamwork and collaboration
Some managers actually care about their employees (even if upper management does not)
Ability to get a wide range of experience

    Cons

Management unwilling to listen to criticism especially when issues are brought up at town halls
Blatant favoritism for promotions, projects and reviews
Directors and above are out of contact with people who report to them
They say that they "follow the science" which is true since too many of their programs are "me too"

    Advice to Management

Perform 360 evaluations of your managers to find out who is REALLY doing their job not who YOU think is a great manager
LISTEN to your employee's complaints rather than put their complaints down to their being difficult or disruptive.
Look at the areas were you are TRULY innovative rather than just following behind the other pharmas.
Place more value on your current employees because they are leaving in droves for the following reasons:
They don't feel valued because there is an emphasis on "stars" rather than the teams
They are not listened to because their questions are discounted
There is a frustration with the promotion process and the review system which has become competitive since no one wants to fall beneath the 3 "meets expectations" line but every year another 10% will need to be there.

I have been working at MedImmune full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    -Decent pay
    -Good benefits
    -Good fitness center
    -Nice labs

    Cons

-If you just want a job this is a good place but if you want to grow, this is not the place for you.
-Middle managers are incompetent and are least bothered about developing their reports.Too much favoritism exists
-It is very hard to even make lateral moves.
    -Managers are unprofessional
-Performance reviews and promotions are illogical.Managers have way too much power in their hands and can make your life miserable if they don't like you.

    Advice to Management

-Please have 360 reviews on your managers
-Do not assume that all scientists will be good managers.
-Hold managers accountable for their roles in supervising and mentoring their reports.

I worked at MedImmune full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Company is growing and has good to excellent R&D scientists

    Cons

Company is poorly managed and reorganization in some departments is constant. Management acts like a parent and chooses favorites and pits a group of employees against the least favorite employee. Management often has little knowledge of job or function but needs to micromanage and control. There is a level of micromanagement here that defeats the purpose of hiring experienced employees.

    Advice to Management

Evaluate management and replace with experienced experts with leadership talent that are not the reason for a revolving door. HR needs to be active in its role.

I have been working at MedImmune full-time

    Pros

-As a research scientist this position has provided the opportunity to learn about the biological drug discovery process and gain insight to the whole pipeline with regard to both science and politics.
    -Free employee fitness center
    -Free employee parking
-TGIF every Friday with free food and alcohol
-Newly remodeled building interior with open concept office floor plans and European interior design
-Free coffee, speciality teas and popcorn
-A great place to gain work experience

    Cons

-Your success and happiness at MedImmune is completely dependent upon the department & manager for which you work.

-The cons I am about to describe are specific to a particular group within a department that I work for and which has a negative reputation generally within the department of research.

*Management create an environment of unhealthy competition
*Management have favorites who are supported while other non-favorites are 'over-looked'.
*Management hold their employees accountable for issues rather than taking responsibility & leading by example and setting the precedent.
*Management lead through fear & intimidation
    *Team work is non-existent
*Politics between managers disrupt scientific progress due to unhealthy competition & the 'fight' for territory.
*MedImmune promotes career development with regard to inter & intra department exchange but this usually becomes political and problematic for the employee.
    *No career development opportunities

    Advice to Management

    Dear MLT,

Please wake up and take a look at the reason why Medi is losing so many great scientists to your competitors.

-It doesn't matter how much free food and alcohol you give, or how 'Zen' you make the building feel. In certain departments there is a real problem with management.
-When people leave Medi, take the time to arrange a face to face exit interview to try & find out the real reason why people are leaving the company.
-Set expectations and standards for all managers & make manager training regular & compulsory.
-Ask the 'foot soldiers' how they really feel and provide a 'safe' environment for them to provide feedback without fear of reprisal.
-Allow people to move between departments

If you do all of the above then MedImmune really will be on track to be a 'Great Place To Work'.

    Pros

    Decent salary for a contractor.

    Cons

Office culture is bad with gossip and office politics. Hires from the outside instead of hiring the contractors. Middle management is not good..poor communication. Contractors are treated like second-class citizens.

    Advice to Management

Get rid the lazy employees and hire the hard-working contractors.

    I worked at MedImmune full-time

    Pros

The benefits and bonus are not bad for the past few years. The gym is pretty good if you use it.

    Cons

There is no cross board standard within company, within department. The head of the department is the king. Whatever policy or working standard can be override by the king.
Promotion is a mess, only based on whether you are the favorite of the boss. No fairness at all, even relatively. Boss likes you, he can hire somebody for you even you work part time with a bachelor's degree. If boss does not like you, even you have 10 years of experience with a Ph.D. degree, you are on you own.

    Salary is below industry average.

HR really sucks. No respect to employees. They can promise you something when you are hired and later on would not honor it. So be careful, make sure everything is on paper.

    Advice to Management

Moral is so low but I guess management does not really care. There is employee survey every year but the concerns from employees are the same every year.

    Pros

Great people. Dedicated to developing medicines to make patients' lives better

    Cons

Now saddled with massive AstraZeneca bureaucracy and resulting pharma-related continuous reorganizations and layoffs

    Advice to Management

Biotech people are not like big pharma people. Morale will continue to decline as job uncertainty persists.
