I worked at MedImmune as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I enjoyed being treated like a member of the team even though I was only an intern. I had a lot of independence and felt like I got a real taste of what industry R&D is like (fast-paced, lots of multitasking, results-driven).

    Cons

I felt somewhat exploited as I was paid a significantly lower wage than most other interns. I got the sense that at least in my department, everyone was under a ton of pressure to perform, although our goals were not focused. The manager I worked under seemed to be taking a shotgun approach to science (try everything and see what works, rather than being more selective and allowing more for in-depth experiments). As an intern I probably should have been put on an existing project with a mentor, but instead was asked to come up with my own project and work alone with minimal training provided and no one specific to report to in the lab who could help me with technical issues (or even just show me around). This ended up being pretty stressful and isolating, and therefore I was less productive than I could have been.

    Advice to Management

Have a formal management plan for interns - don't leave them to fend for themselves. I would have had a much better experience if I hadn't felt so isolated from my peers in the lab. Reporting to a VP was nice in some respects, but without a research mentor it took much longer to get up to speed and accomplish anything worthwhile.

I have been working at MedImmune full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great culture, high morale, great pay and benefits. Smart colleagues. Some groups have great managers, others not so much. Moving around in the organization is possible. Promotions are hard to get.

    Cons

Ever present sense that you could lose your job based on the quarterly performance of the oncology portfolio drugs.

    Advice to Management

Get the layoffs done and move on.

I worked at MedImmune full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Some of the best scientists around (If only the management would listen to them)
Within some groups there is great teamwork and collaboration
Some managers actually care about their employees (even if upper management does not)
Ability to get a wide range of experience

    Cons

Management unwilling to listen to criticism especially when issues are brought up at town halls
Blatant favoritism for promotions, projects and reviews
Directors and above are out of contact with people who report to them
They say that they "follow the science" which is true since too many of their programs are "me too"

    Advice to Management

Perform 360 evaluations of your managers to find out who is REALLY doing their job not who YOU think is a great manager
LISTEN to your employee's complaints rather than put their complaints down to their being difficult or disruptive.
Look at the areas were you are TRULY innovative rather than just following behind the other pharmas.
Place more value on your current employees because they are leaving in droves for the following reasons:
They don't feel valued because there is an emphasis on "stars" rather than the teams
They are not listened to because their questions are discounted
There is a frustration with the promotion process and the review system which has become competitive since no one wants to fall beneath the 3 "meets expectations" line but every year another 10% will need to be there.

I worked at MedImmune as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Great work/life balance! Friday socials with free food and activities and music, many places to relax/recline - even a video game room!
    - The environment is fast-paced and expectations are high, but everyone seemed to be having a great time and are very willing to help if you approach them
    - I was never given secretarial work or any jobs that were not great learning experiences, and was encouraged to take breaks and get free food at various lunch-and-learns where I got to meet other interns and learn about work being done in other research departments

    Cons

    - They've recently cut down the number of interns they're taking, so it's gotten more competitive

    Pros

Nice campus. Hard-working employees dedicated to the science. Strong mission statement.

    Cons

Poor management. No culture of accountability. Negative environment created by a few key management officers.

    Advice to Management

Actually execute on the mission statement. Stop the petty infighting. Support the hard working staff. Take accountability rather than pushing it to whatever corner you can.

    Pros

They offer competitive salaries and excellent benefits. In addition, they support a healthy eating lifestyle and provide a full workout facility with exercise classes.

    Cons

There really isn't many things I could say that are cons. If I had to pick one area of concern it would be not enough electric charging stations for electric cars.
