I have been working at MedImmune full-time

    Pros

-As a research scientist this position has provided the opportunity to learn about the biological drug discovery process and gain insight to the whole pipeline with regard to both science and politics.
    -Free employee fitness center
    -Free employee parking
-TGIF every Friday with free food and alcohol
-Newly remodeled building interior with open concept office floor plans and European interior design
-Free coffee, speciality teas and popcorn
-A great place to gain work experience

    Cons

-Your success and happiness at MedImmune is completely dependent upon the department & manager for which you work.

-The cons I am about to describe are specific to a particular group within a department that I work for and which has a negative reputation generally within the department of research.

*Management create an environment of unhealthy competition
*Management have favorites who are supported while other non-favorites are 'over-looked'.
*Management hold their employees accountable for issues rather than taking responsibility & leading by example and setting the precedent.
*Management lead through fear & intimidation
    *Team work is non-existent
*Politics between managers disrupt scientific progress due to unhealthy competition & the 'fight' for territory.
*MedImmune promotes career development with regard to inter & intra department exchange but this usually becomes political and problematic for the employee.
    *No career development opportunities

    Advice to Management

    Dear MLT,

Please wake up and take a look at the reason why Medi is losing so many great scientists to your competitors.

-It doesn't matter how much free food and alcohol you give, or how 'Zen' you make the building feel. In certain departments there is a real problem with management.
-When people leave Medi, take the time to arrange a face to face exit interview to try & find out the real reason why people are leaving the company.
-Set expectations and standards for all managers & make manager training regular & compulsory.
-Ask the 'foot soldiers' how they really feel and provide a 'safe' environment for them to provide feedback without fear of reprisal.
-Allow people to move between departments

If you do all of the above then MedImmune really will be on track to be a 'Great Place To Work'.

I worked at MedImmune as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great vibe. The decor and work environment are very nice.
    Good work/life balance.

    Cons

Lack sense of clear direction for the company from senior management
Internship was what you wanted to get out of it, as in I worked very hard and learned an a lot during my summer internship from all the different scientists, but I know other interns who didn't put in much effort and got very little out of the experience

    Advice to Management

The company could be better organized, with more streamlined workflow. The management and work ethic seems inefficient at times.

I worked at MedImmune as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

My mentor and manager were excellent with training me in the lab and allowing me to be a part of every part of their research during my three month internship.
The other interns are very social- we did things like go out to eat a lot, go to a National's game, etc.

    Cons

Honestly I only got this internship because I had a connection. Otherwise, I believe they are very competitive and pushing your resume through the system could be tricky.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the internship program! Going through Kelly Services wasn't the best experience ever, but it seemed to be fine for me.

I have been working at MedImmune full-time

    Pros

Medi has made efforts to engage its employees, with flex. work arrangements for many employees, an upgrade of its facilities, and regular happy hours. Turnover is low and most people seem content with good salaries and work-life balance. As the new science hub for US Astrazeneca, the opportunities at the Gaithersburg site should only grow. The fitness center is excellent and there are plans to build a childcare center.

    Cons

Career progression is limited in a lot of groups, particularly outside R&D (where there is a formal career ladder for scientists). It seems there is a bias towards hiring external talent vs. developing existing employees

    Advice to Management

Make career development a priority in the form of rotations, stretch assignments, a philosophy of internal hiring, etc.

I have been working at MedImmune as a contractor

    Pros

know lots of skills in a short time, enjoy the team work.

    Cons

full time employees don't like or even look upon the contractor, push lots of work to them, the contractor don't have too many chances to speak out, sometime needs to work overload. No benefits at all.

    Advice to Management

contractors are the members of the team
