    Pros

Great people. Good pay. Very good management. Loved working there. Wish I was still working there.

    Cons

In sales the down side is always missing goals. But, the goals were pretty fair.

    Advice to Management

    Happy with management

I worked at Media General full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great resume builder and lead generator for future jobs

    Cons

You will be promised a "list" but it will not meet the pay level that you were promised during your interview because ratings and revenue have dipped so low that your territory will be raided by other reps before you come on board.

    Advice to Management

Stop forcing your reps to push every package you dream up just so you can tell upper management that you did YOUR job. Stop making them attend mindless training sessions so you can check off a box. Have the guts to be honest with employees...selling is done outside of the office.

I worked at Media General full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Knowledgeable and helpful co-workers who cared about the product. The product was a great one to sell. The compensation was very reasonable.

    Cons

Managers are inept as it gets. Good ole boy system alive and well in their linen suits. Upper management is absolutely clueless. Middle management is just trying to hang onto their jobs. While I was there, middle managers were partying with reps and handing accounts out to the girls they partied with. Upper management was receiving reports of Peyton Place and they would shoot the messenger. The place was so bad they bought a traffic system that was virtually unusable. No body bothered to check it out before this huge corporate purchase? Thousands upon Thousands of dollars lost in advertiser dollars because they could not figure the system out. Departments were not allowed to talk to other departments unless they went through Department heads. If this company makes it through the decade, color me surprised.

    Advice to Management

Already given and rejected. They prefer to ride this wagon till the wheels fall off.

I have been working at Media General full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Most coworkers make it a fun and enjoyable place to work.

    Cons

Don't take a job as an inside sales rep. The call center is managed by people that will tell you what you want to hear at the interview, and then it's "their way or the highway" once you're hired. They micro-manage you to death. They use fear and intimidation to beat down the rank and file. If you have talent and can produce, you will ultimately be looking for another job once again. You can't even move to another department, as they will squash all attempts. Their egos will not allow you to get the better of them. At the interview, be sure to ask about the "Dialing for Donuts" room.

    Advice to Management

There are too many people in supervisory positions that did not get to where they are through hard work and merit. Politics and the good old boy network are destroying your company. Do something before the Tampa Bay Times becomes the only paper in Tampa Bay. Listen to your employees at the lowest level. Don't rely on your managers to give you the real story.

I have been working at Media General full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The compensation is decent, the co workers are great, and they have excellent on the job training.

    Cons

It starts with the interview process for the Classified Department. The 2 managers that are in charge make you think that you will be treated like an adult professional. Then when you start they micromanage you to death. When you try to approach them about this they say it's our way or the highway. Not a professional way to handle your employees concerns. Combine that with the fact that if you do manage to stick it out you go nowhere in the company.

    Advice to Management

Dump the mid level managers that have been in the same position for more than 10 years and bring in people that have a fresh perspective and some empathy for their workforce.

    Pros

Good Coffee, exceptional hours, good parking, professional atmosphere.

    Cons

Antiquated system and technology, poor management, lack of ingenuity. Takes two weeks to access reports. Too many chiefs, not enough indians. Far fetched expectations with out a firm foundation to work from.

    Advice to Management

Open your minds and doors to new ideas and spend some time and money in IT.

    Pros

Great Place to grow professionally. There are many benefits to working for #1 Newspaper, #1 TV station and #1 Local News Website.

    Cons

With so many changes in 2011 managers and employees were left wondering if their job would exist in the next week. They recently laid off 165 employees a week before Christmas. If you have a great year and bring in revenue over your annual budget you will pay for it the following year. To save money and even the playing field your percentage paid will be scaled down. You must work twice as hard to make the same as the previous year.

    Advice to Management

Trim middle management, empower and create incentives that motivate your employees, effectively combat regional competition, and invest in younger employees through management training.

    Pros

There are a few good mid-level managers left, who somehow survived the lay-offs, and these managers are great to work for and have defended front-line workers as best they could.

    Cons

Massive waves of lay-offs have contributed to a cynical, dog-eat-dog culture. The pay is terrible and worsening. And management seems to be unable to cope gracefully with the Richmond Times-Dispatch's dwindling relevance.

    Advice to Management

Concentrate on creating more niche market and hyper-local publications, online or print. Also, a restructuring of the entire classified advertising section is needed. Perhaps more free ads for advertisers are needed -- or something like the first X amount of lines are free, etc. It just seems pointless to pay for classified ads these days.

    Pros

The best reason to work at Media General is meeting fellow coworkers who mistakingly took the same position you did thinking they might set the world on fire. The job also comes with a certain amount of freedom.

    Cons

Laughable pay, always on call (blackberry,) TV and newspaper media are dying - Media General too late to notice. Management arbitrarily hire from outside. No respect for older employees. Little vacation time.

    Advice to Management

Quit making up ridiculous positions to find friends a job. Realize TV and newspaper are the past.
