I worked at Media General full-time

    Pros

Great benefits and 3rd week of vacation relatively quickly. Huge network of stations for potential to start at small market and move up steadily. Lots of creative, resourceful people who genuinely want to be a news resource for their market. Huge company size means lots of bargaining power.

    Cons

Latest acquisition by Nexstar leaves a lot of uncertainty for "legacy" MG stations as far as management styles, staff retention and budgets are concerned. Pay isn't great and some managers would rather hire a parade of cheap rookies than invest in experienced talent. Maybe wait a year or two for the transition to take full effect before you join a Media General station. Pay more attention to the Nexstar reviews on Glassdoor than MG.

    Advice to Management

I hope Nexstar doesn't try to fix things unless they're broken but I have a feeling shareholder profit will be the highest priority even if the news product suffers and employee morale suffers. Vince Sadusky gets a neutral rating in this review because he's on his way out.

I have been working at Media General (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Staff is helpful, when it comes to getting work editing done in a crunch. Photogs chip in where needed, like doing each others live shots, and finishing editing at times or help with special effects. Producers pitch in to help write or booth shows.

    Cons

Rarely does a producer go out into the field, to experience what the photog or reporter sees
All the edit bays are disjointed, meaning they all don't have the same capabilities. The newsroom is outdated, so there is always construction makeovers cables adjusted to make it up to date for staff. The computers are not synced withe same software either for any staff member to log in anywhere they see fit.

    Advice to Management

Spend some time in the newsroom to see some of the difficulties staff faces on a daily basis. Don't just pass through to see the News Director and leave.

    Advice to Management

    Pros

Great camaraderie with employees, good learning ground, working with & learning from experienced journalists

    Cons

LOW salary, low communication skills between employers and management, constant technical issues, management has questionable news judgment, too afraid to tackle controversial news stories

    Advice to Management

Pay your workers & don't be afraid to take risk with story content

I worked at Media General full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits are on a par with other companies in this field. Grateful for anything. Some good people who invariably don't stay.

    Cons

Constant micro-managing. Focus on recording insignificant 'errors' completely unaware of real quality of talent. Fear-mongering. Dated management whims.

    Advice to Management

Management has never listened to anyone but yes-men and paid consultants.

I have been working at Media General full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Own the top station in the market I live in.

    Cons

Getting time off is next to impossible, the hours are ridiculous (not quantity, just the schedule), and management is not understanding in the least that employees have personal lives. Also, the pay is not good either.

    Advice to Management

Show you employees that you care more by paying them a living wage, being fair, and treating them with more respect (even if this is their first job). Also understand that even though this is the news business, reporters/anchors/producers all do have family and friends.

I worked at Media General full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Wear multiple hats, direct link to senior exectives

    Cons

not enough staff for the work, horrible work-life-balance, laughable relationships between colleagues.

    Advice to Management

Employees are people, too. They can't counteract the deplorable state of your industry just cause you stomped your feet and told them, too.

I worked at Media General full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Some of the stations did let their employees go early on holidays and had station parties.

    Cons

pay is not the best, the management is terrible ( good old boys network alive and well ), people who were in tight with "movers and shakers" got key jobs that otherwise would never get even considered, lots of pressure to "produce" and watching consultants parade in and out of the stations giving them the same tired and unproductive advice and walking out with LOADS of cash

    Advice to Management

Quit worrying about YOUR pockets and start worrying about your employee's pockets. You worry about cost, yet your poor pay and conditions force employees to leave. You then hire a new person and they make mistakes and errors in learning that cost you MONEY.
