I worked at Media General full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great place to work in teams and collaborate with others on projects. Fast-paced environment 365 Days a year. Everyone pulled their own weight to get the job done.

    Cons

A lot of management and ownership changes meant that there were always changes in rules and expectations. Vacation time could always be expanded to help ease stress of the jobs.

    Advice to Management

Vacation time could always be expanded to help ease stress of the jobs. When a team manager takes over, having a group meeting with upper management and the new manager and his or her employees would be a good concept to consider.

    Cons

There were no significant pay raises

I worked at Media General full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Media General was a highly organized and professional environment. I enjoyed working with a respectful management team employing a solid development curriculum. The company culture was positive with an emphasis on work/life balance.

    Cons

Subsequent to several mergers, the company name and logo was finally retired and is now Nexstar TV. Not having worked for Nexstar I cannot weigh-in on any issues with that company, but some of the interim mergers were marked by leadership challenges and an overall lack of communication to middle-management and staff.

    Advice to Management

The management team in charge of the M&A process is no longer in place as is my understanding, however clear and concise communication about company targets and goals is always appreciated.

I worked at Media General full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great coworkers, very knowledgeable about design work

Very friendly atmosphere (love, love, LOVED the people I worked with then)

    Pushed to learn more/grow

    Cons

Shift work made it hard to balance a work/personal life depending on your shift (9am-6pm, 2pm-11pm, 12am-9am)

Sometimes had to work off-hours/holidays because of the nature of it running 24/7 (but you did get double pay on those days)

Pay (due to it's quick expansion before being bought out by Nexstar, they needed the bodies and chose to cut pay for new hires to only offer a very meager salary)

No real room for advancement in position

Now owned by Nexstar Broadcasting (lacks communication from upper management, no growth, cut benefits, once the company was bought out by them the layoffs started happening immediately leading to a very high turnover rate for anyone left -- basically any negative reviews you read about them are all unfortunately true)

    Advice to Management

Actually invest in your employees instead of cutting things left and right or outright ignoring what you've bought out just to have as a money cow, and maybe you'd actually see a return in quality and happiness.

I worked at Media General full-time

    Pros

Had some nice freedom at times, enjoyed many of the employees, the atmosphere could feel like family sometimes, the station manager was wonderful. Sometimes they had an ice cream truck show up on hot days in summer to show worker appreciation, as a wonderfully nice way of saying thank you. Gave me flexibility on my hours. Allowed people to move into other depts.

    Cons

Departments were stingy about raises,(which left people feeling stuck and unappreciated) and then the station would buy lots of new stuff, even though they couldn't keep the things in place working properly or to just replace new things that they thought weren't good enough months later. Sometimes it felt like there would only be one person to fix a rather large problem. Also egos were seemingly an issue and sometimes stood in the way of progress. Not much vacation time, that's not unusual though.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees skills and loyalty and you'll be surprised what you get back in return. Tokens of gratitude are a nice way to show you care, but years without raises while people absorb more responsibility becomes an issue.

    Pros

Great people at the team level

    Cons

Lacked communication from top down, benefits not competitive with other in same industries, no support for rolling out new initiatives after each acquisition

    Advice to Management

C Suite at Corporate level need to communicate down to their Sr. Management teams to improve collaboration, avoiding some companies feeling left out of the strategy; provide support to those companies you want to thrive; show you care about the employees who stay after the multiple separations and acquisitions.
