I worked at Media General full-time

    Pros

Had some nice freedom at times, enjoyed many of the employees, the atmosphere could feel like family sometimes, the station manager was wonderful. Sometimes they had an ice cream truck show up on hot days in summer to show worker appreciation, as a wonderfully nice way of saying thank you. Gave me flexibility on my hours. Allowed people to move into other depts.

    Cons

Departments were stingy about raises,(which left people feeling stuck and unappreciated) and then the station would buy lots of new stuff, even though they couldn't keep the things in place working properly or to just replace new things that they thought weren't good enough months later. Sometimes it felt like there would only be one person to fix a rather large problem. Also egos were seemingly an issue and sometimes stood in the way of progress. Not much vacation time, that's not unusual though.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees skills and loyalty and you'll be surprised what you get back in return. Tokens of gratitude are a nice way to show you care, but years without raises while people absorb more responsibility becomes an issue.

I worked at Media General full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people at the team level

    Cons

Lacked communication from top down, benefits not competitive with other in same industries, no support for rolling out new initiatives after each acquisition

    Advice to Management

C Suite at Corporate level need to communicate down to their Sr. Management teams to improve collaboration, avoiding some companies feeling left out of the strategy; provide support to those companies you want to thrive; show you care about the employees who stay after the multiple separations and acquisitions.

    Pros

Not many -- all of the pros left when the company was acquired by Nexstar.

    Cons

New management at Nexstar doesn't care about employees

I have been working at Media General full-time

    Pros

I have worked with a wonderful group of really talented people. Great managers over the years have helped me advance my skills. Great flexibility. There may be more opportunity for advancement in the larger Nexstar.

    Cons

Unfortunately, now that MG is no more, the future is uncertain. It seems like every merger brought changes that were mainly for the worse. Nexstar seems like less of a "family" to me. We shall see though.

    Advice to Management

Continue challenging employees and providing opportunities for them to advance.

I worked at Media General full-time

    Pros

Because the management is so bad there is no one supervising employees and most days there is no work to be done because there is no one creating projects or delegating work to do that more often than not you will have 4-5 hours a day free to work on freelance projects, and search for a better job.

    Cons

Awful management makes progress impossible. There is no way this company can compete or keep up with Scripps, Sinclair, or Meredith when it comes to the future of local TV news. The upcoming merger with Nexstar will only make things worse. None of their stations are 1 in their markets and sadly at this point even keeping the handful of stations in 2nd place seems impossible.
