I worked at Media General full-time

    Pros

Because the management is so bad there is no one supervising employees and most days there is no work to be done because there is no one creating projects or delegating work to do that more often than not you will have 4-5 hours a day free to work on freelance projects, and search for a better job.

    Cons

Awful management makes progress impossible. There is no way this company can compete or keep up with Scripps, Sinclair, or Meredith when it comes to the future of local TV news. The upcoming merger with Nexstar will only make things worse. None of their stations are 1 in their markets and sadly at this point even keeping the handful of stations in 2nd place seems impossible.

I worked at Media General full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Everyone you work with has the same feeling. Some clients are great and some really are not. The team works well together sometimes.

    Cons

There is no autonomy as an outside sales person-your time is micromanaged, constant last minute fire drills due to poor planning on management's side, inflated budgets that become unattainable. There is no real training to help you achieve your goals and promises that are not kept.
    Awful life/work balance.

    Advice to Management

Stop managing with a FEAR mentality. The workers will respect your more if you actually praise them for their hard work instead of being unfriendly and unhelpful and not pleasant to be around. Be motivating instead of de-motivating.

"Look hard at your GM/GSM Managers"

    Pros

Forward thinking company with expanding footprint nationwide.

    Cons

Too many subsequent mergers have corporate/upper management too worried about "landgrab/musical chairs" and if they will have a job or not to notice what is happening at individual units where employees have become a revolving door due to poor/often hostile work environments due to the impact of poor leadership

    Advice to Management

Don't be blinded by historical BCF figures when coming into a new corporate position....need to look at the details on how many and why so many mid mgr and AE changes are happening.

I worked at Media General full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, I worked as a News Producer in Jackson. The executive producer will teach and help you learn everything about producing.

    Cons

Hard to move up, get time you requested off. You will get stuck producing 1 show. I worked 12 hours shifts.

    Advice to Management

Salary for producers is not enough.

    Pros

Great resume builder and lead generator for future jobs

    Cons

You will be promised a "list" but it will not meet the pay level that you were promised during your interview because ratings and revenue have dipped so low that your territory will be raided by other reps before you come on board.

    Advice to Management

Stop forcing your reps to push every package you dream up just so you can tell upper management that you did YOUR job. Stop making them attend mindless training sessions so you can check off a box. Have the guts to be honest with employees...selling is done outside of the office.

I have been working at Media General full-time

    Pros

Working with very talented people in their fields at the station level and hub level. Professionalism to the highest degree.

    Cons

Unfortunately most of these talented people are overworked and overwhelmed. Also the lack of leadership is frustrating. Currently most employees feel set up for failure and unable to meet unrealistic expectations. Many are being poached by other companies, or simply leaving without any sort of fall back.

    Advice to Management

Change in management is needed immediately. Also, not hiring to replace employees that have left, is crushing the current staff. When there's someone having a breakdown and crying on a weekly basis, there needs to be change.

    Pros

they have so much going on that they don't notice a lot, so it's easy to slide under the radar

    Cons

they are unstable and with the drop in their stock value, I was left up a creek wout a paddle

    Advice to Management

start making your management communicate with non management employees so everyone has a chance to know what is going on within the company and station

I have been working at Media General full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

It was good for a while, even through the rough furlough days. Pay is alright but could be much better.

    Cons

The top tier of management is disengaged and clueless.

    Advice to Management

Move on and stop trying to burn this institution down. Richmond burned once and that's enough.

    Pros

Good ratings in the industry, fair benefits

    Cons

They have a great "pitch" to get you on board. Beware of the details they don't share. Be sure to ask how many people are there this year versus last year. Management style is from the '50's. The "boys club" reigns and double standard is rampant: men vs women. The exception is the female senior manager that has even the rank and file quaking in their boots; just because she can. They have absolutely no sense of customer service either. Digital journalists are hired and fired with not even 90 days to prove themselves. They do not have a progressive disciplinary policy; no warnings, just " they are gone" with little or no reason.
Absolutely without doubt, the most inefficient, poorly managed operation I have ever encountered.

    Advice to Management

I can't begin to give advice. My advice to applicants regardless of job function is look elsewhere.

I worked at Media General part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good place to learn for a short time, work on your skills and try to numb yourself to inevitable M.T. Suits which remain after new owners.

    Cons

Company has such a history of mismanagement and indifference to employees that any manager with 10+ years would have to be removed and that isn't likely. Not a single word from any company rep or source could be trusted. Every encounter with management forced one into a defensive position -management very confrontational. Exhausting micro-management.

    Advice to Management

Until old management has reached their retirement or been ousted, little positive change can occur unless forced upon them by new owners.
