I worked at Media General full-time

I worked at Media General full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great coworkers, very knowledgeable about design work

Very friendly atmosphere (love, love, LOVED the people I worked with then)

    Pushed to learn more/grow

    Cons

Shift work made it hard to balance a work/personal life depending on your shift (9am-6pm, 2pm-11pm, 12am-9am)

Sometimes had to work off-hours/holidays because of the nature of it running 24/7 (but you did get double pay on those days)

Pay (due to it's quick expansion before being bought out by Nexstar, they needed the bodies and chose to cut pay for new hires to only offer a very meager salary)

No real room for advancement in position

Now owned by Nexstar Broadcasting (lacks communication from upper management, no growth, cut benefits, once the company was bought out by them the layoffs started happening immediately leading to a very high turnover rate for anyone left -- basically any negative reviews you read about them are all unfortunately true)

    Advice to Management

Actually invest in your employees instead of cutting things left and right or outright ignoring what you've bought out just to have as a money cow, and maybe you'd actually see a return in quality and happiness.

I worked at Media General full-time

    Cons

Periodically staff positions remained open too long

    Advice to Management

Be sure to keep staffing levels at capacity

    Advice to Management

    Let your talented people shine.

I worked at Media General full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people at the team level

    Cons

Lacked communication from top down, benefits not competitive with other in same industries, no support for rolling out new initiatives after each acquisition

    Advice to Management

C Suite at Corporate level need to communicate down to their Sr. Management teams to improve collaboration, avoiding some companies feeling left out of the strategy; provide support to those companies you want to thrive; show you care about the employees who stay after the multiple separations and acquisitions.

I have been working at Media General full-time

    Pros

I have worked with a wonderful group of really talented people. Great managers over the years have helped me advance my skills. Great flexibility. There may be more opportunity for advancement in the larger Nexstar.

    Cons

Unfortunately, now that MG is no more, the future is uncertain. It seems like every merger brought changes that were mainly for the worse. Nexstar seems like less of a "family" to me. We shall see though.

    Advice to Management

Continue challenging employees and providing opportunities for them to advance.

I worked at Media General full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Media General is now Nexstar My experience with MG is relatively good. Benefits were as good or better than other media companies I've worked for.

    Cons

Reporters are overworked with many new positions coming as one-man-bands.

    Advice to Management

respect your employees on a day-to-day basis. Too many managers take for granted the work your people do.

    Cons

Mergers and acquisitions resulted in loss of key employees and leaders.

    Pros

In most positions they pay well. Benefits are good.

    Cons

They are unorganized, pay various employees incorrectly, wrong deductions or no pay at all. HR seems confused most timesuccessful but provides image they have it together.

    Advice to Management

Some people are just biding time until Nexstar buy out. Random job cutting, people are uncertain about future. No guarantee on retention letter and they'll let you go to save on bottom line. Provide reassurance to remaining ee's.

I have been working at Media General full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Mid-high market company with a good diversification of networks and locals. Benefits are competitive with a 401k match. Overall middle of the road.

    Cons

Cheap and ineffective. The company as a whole listens to the sway of consultants (failed news directors) instead of the market audience. As well as continues to ride out old, out of date, and failing equipment until it completely breaks down (sometimes on air).

    Advice to Management

Stop listening to consultants and spend some money on your product.
