    Pros

Forward thinking company with expanding footprint nationwide.

    Cons

Too many subsequent mergers have corporate/upper management too worried about "landgrab/musical chairs" and if they will have a job or not to notice what is happening at individual units where employees have become a revolving door due to poor/often hostile work environments due to the impact of poor leadership

    Advice to Management

Don't be blinded by historical BCF figures when coming into a new corporate position....need to look at the details on how many and why so many mid mgr and AE changes are happening.

I worked at Media General full-time

    Pros

Great benefits and 3rd week of vacation relatively quickly. Huge network of stations for potential to start at small market and move up steadily. Lots of creative, resourceful people who genuinely want to be a news resource for their market. Huge company size means lots of bargaining power.

    Cons

Latest acquisition by Nexstar leaves a lot of uncertainty for "legacy" MG stations as far as management styles, staff retention and budgets are concerned. Pay isn't great and some managers would rather hire a parade of cheap rookies than invest in experienced talent. Maybe wait a year or two for the transition to take full effect before you join a Media General station. Pay more attention to the Nexstar reviews on Glassdoor than MG.

    Advice to Management

I hope Nexstar doesn't try to fix things unless they're broken but I have a feeling shareholder profit will be the highest priority even if the news product suffers and employee morale suffers. Vince Sadusky gets a neutral rating in this review because he's on his way out.

    Cons

Senior management lost sight of their employees, during each merger.

    Advice to Management

Truly value the employees more through solid benefits and pay.

I have been working at Media General (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Staff is helpful, when it comes to getting work editing done in a crunch. Photogs chip in where needed, like doing each others live shots, and finishing editing at times or help with special effects. Producers pitch in to help write or booth shows.

    Cons

Rarely does a producer go out into the field, to experience what the photog or reporter sees
All the edit bays are disjointed, meaning they all don't have the same capabilities. The newsroom is outdated, so there is always construction makeovers cables adjusted to make it up to date for staff. The computers are not synced withe same software either for any staff member to log in anywhere they see fit.

    Advice to Management

Spend some time in the newsroom to see some of the difficulties staff faces on a daily basis. Don't just pass through to see the News Director and leave.

I have been working at Media General full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great atmosphere and environment, social culture, and now, a new volunteering initiative that appeals to me. Fun parties and events. Nice equipment / tools.

    Cons

Public company, so sometimes it feels like the people in control only care about the stakeholders and bottom line. Not much room for growth, at least in corporate positions. Pay is not great. Raises only come to those with title changes. Underwent 2 mergers.

    Advice to Management

Try to genuinely show care towards your employees. Be as transparent as possible! Offer equal opportunities for promotions. Not just the favorites.

    Pros

Friendly, helpful atmosphere. Relatively good salary. Good benefits.

    Cons

With all the mergers and buy-outs, nobody's job is safe right now. With the duality of positions, the larger company is laying off Media General employees and putting their employees in those positions.

  10. "Great support"

I have been working at Media General full-time

    Pros

Amazing people to work with that help bring your client visions to life. Good backend support to manage various types of campaigns.

    Cons

Things don't always move as fast as you want with a big company.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the support. Great assistance when you need it and happy to leave you alone when you do not.

    Pros

Developing young reporters, teaching them the journalistic ropes

    Cons

Long hours, resources stretched too thin inside news departments. News morale low

    Advice to Management

Invest in the people who work for you not just sell for you
