    Pros

In most positions they pay well. Benefits are good.

    Cons

They are unorganized, pay various employees incorrectly, wrong deductions or no pay at all. HR seems confused most timesuccessful but provides image they have it together.

    Advice to Management

Some people are just biding time until Nexstar buy out. Random job cutting, people are uncertain about future. No guarantee on retention letter and they'll let you go to save on bottom line. Provide reassurance to remaining ee's.

I have been working at Media General full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Mid-high market company with a good diversification of networks and locals. Benefits are competitive with a 401k match. Overall middle of the road.

    Cons

Cheap and ineffective. The company as a whole listens to the sway of consultants (failed news directors) instead of the market audience. As well as continues to ride out old, out of date, and failing equipment until it completely breaks down (sometimes on air).

    Advice to Management

Stop listening to consultants and spend some money on your product.

    Pros

    Opportunities to learn are endless.

    Cons

Overworked and underpaid. They are constantly trying to add more tasks to each employee instead of hiring more people.

    Advice to Management

    Hire more people.

I worked at Media General full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Everyone you work with has the same feeling. Some clients are great and some really are not. The team works well together sometimes.

    Cons

There is no autonomy as an outside sales person-your time is micromanaged, constant last minute fire drills due to poor planning on management's side, inflated budgets that become unattainable. There is no real training to help you achieve your goals and promises that are not kept.
    Awful life/work balance.

    Advice to Management

Stop managing with a FEAR mentality. The workers will respect your more if you actually praise them for their hard work instead of being unfriendly and unhelpful and not pleasant to be around. Be motivating instead of de-motivating.

I have been working at Media General full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefit package with health care and Fidelity 401-k retirement program. With the proper management team in place it has been a good place to work for.

    Cons

Media General is being sold to Nextstar at the end of 2016. The new owners have a reputation of cost cutting and may make for a good place to get experience as opposed to a long career.

"Look hard at your GM/GSM Managers"

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Forward thinking company with expanding footprint nationwide.

    Cons

Too many subsequent mergers have corporate/upper management too worried about "landgrab/musical chairs" and if they will have a job or not to notice what is happening at individual units where employees have become a revolving door due to poor/often hostile work environments due to the impact of poor leadership

    Advice to Management

Don't be blinded by historical BCF figures when coming into a new corporate position....need to look at the details on how many and why so many mid mgr and AE changes are happening.

    Pros

They are flexible with needing to work around personal appointments. Medical benefits are pretty good. Working to keep up with technical advances.

    Cons

I think if they would motivate people to want to do a better job they would get better results. Happiness makes a better place to work.
