I worked at Media General full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Local management appears to care. Decent benefit package, 401k match, quite a bit of time off (especially if you are a legacy employee). Occasionally some extremely fun and exciting days, but becoming fewer and further between.

    Cons

Merger after merger. Understaffed, at least in my local market. Corporate seems to have very little knowledge on benefits and how to fix any kind of payroll issues. If I remember correctly I received 3 amended W2s this year, one after April 15. Overall lack of organization. Very shortsighted goals, presumably just trying to get through the next acquisition and keep spending at a bare minimum. Sales ruled the roost and would have more impact on the news department than ethics would dictate.

    Advice to Management

Make decisions that will make you a leader in your market. I understand that you have an obligation to the board and shareholders but there will be a time after the quarter or FY that you have to remain competitive in order to remain relevant. Give employees a reason to want the company to succeed.

I have been working at Media General full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great coworkers. No micromanagement. Great benefits. One of the first hub facilities in the country. Company Kitchen break room with free coffee and hot chocolate.

    Cons

No chance of advancement. Like most master control positions the only thing to hope for might be an occasional supervisor opening with time. That comes with it on set of problems. Not for everyone.

    Advice to Management

Buy Meredith. Stay away from Nexstar.

I worked at Media General full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, I worked as a News Producer in Jackson. The executive producer will teach and help you learn everything about producing.

    Cons

Hard to move up, get time you requested off. You will get stuck producing 1 show. I worked 12 hours shifts.

    Advice to Management

Salary for producers is not enough.

I have been working at Media General full-time

    Pros

Independent to work on your own and your ideas are heard. Less meetings so more time to work on your projects. Great location, can walk downtown for lunch. Company trying to bring comrade together by creating monthly fun events for us all.

    Cons

Shortage on garage parking access. Some park around homeless shelter can be a bit discouraging. Pay could be better

    Advice to Management

To actually use and implement the ideas created from their employees.

I worked at Media General full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great resume builder and lead generator for future jobs

    Cons

You will be promised a "list" but it will not meet the pay level that you were promised during your interview because ratings and revenue have dipped so low that your territory will be raided by other reps before you come on board.

    Advice to Management

Stop forcing your reps to push every package you dream up just so you can tell upper management that you did YOUR job. Stop making them attend mindless training sessions so you can check off a box. Have the guts to be honest with employees...selling is done outside of the office.

    Pros

A leader in Broadcasting and Media. A staple in the communities we service. An ever-changing, growing company with plans to become number one in the industry are all good things in my book!

    Cons

Furloughs and layoffs ran rampant in the late 2000's and early teens. No real structure. The corporate ladder is hard to find. Seems like a lot of wealthy execs are at the top but haven't tried to connect with the every day workers since Marshall left the helm.

    Advice to Management

Create a real path to greatness. Employees need to know how to move up to the next level, having these standards will create a better company, bring in more revenue, reduce lay offs.

    Cons

For a company that's in the communication industry, we're pretty bad at communication
