I worked at Mediabistro (More than a year)

    Pros

Stable business, average benefits, average amenities, not a revolving door of ever-changing staff, good staff, good location and access to transportation.

    Cons

Stiff corporate culture, poor career advancement, backstabbing, lack of diversity, micromanaging, adversity to new ideas, poor communication, unclear mission nor goals.

I worked at Mediabistro full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The new Mediabistro team is finally taking shape after some major restructuring, coupled with high turnover, over the past couple of years. Highlights include the bright, open office space in Hell's Kitchen and regular happy hours, potlucks, and lunch and learns.

    Cons

Nailing down the company-wide business strategy is still a work in progress. Once a successful course is set across departments, employees will undoubtedly feel more secure, motivated and inspired to do the best work possible.

    Advice to Management

Foster a more collaborative work environment. Keep departments from working in silos; otherwise, you risk employees feeling as if their work doesn't matter or that they're not contributing to the greater business goals.

    Pros

I enjoyed my time with Mediabistro - the company was loved by the community which made the work feel like it had a purpose

    Cons

NO sizable raises, ever. Always stock options which never amounted to anything.

    Advice to Management

Care as much for your staff as they do for their work.

    Pros

Love the business aspect without being so corporate. Many after work events sponsored by the company where you were able to interact with co-workers on a more personal level. Finance department was always willing to help.

    Cons

Some employees were personal friends of upper management and they sometimes tried to use that to get by on required tasks. But once it was mentioned it was handled.

    Advice to Management

Have a group meeting to inform all of duties so no misunderstanding.

    I worked at Mediabistro full-time

    Pros

For a smaller company, I was exposed to many different areas in my profession and there seemed to be a new challenge everyday. Most employees there are team players and makes work that much more enjoyable when everyone shares the same goals.

    Cons

Managers were hesitant to give promotions and while the pay was in line with expectations, there was never a 401k match.

    Advice to Management

Show a bit of appreciation to workers under the radar.

I worked at Mediabistro full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good location in San Francisco. Will help you make lots of industry contacts. Awesome co-workers.

    Cons

Nearly everyone has been driven away or laid off by senior management. Senior management have no clue about products offered by the company and are hell-bent on running as cheap an operation as possible.

    Advice to Management

Work with the editorial team to create quality content and learn how your product works. Stop being so cheap. Stop blaming past employees for current problems with the company.
