I worked at Medical Action Industries full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Compensation Plan was incredible. CEO was a tremendous Leader. Self Starting position which had a ton of opportunity to grow. Was not micromanaged

    Cons

Once Contracts were in place and if you didn't win the business you wouldn't have an opportunity to win the business again for the term of the contract that is in place.

I worked at Medical Action Industries full-time

    Pros

There were many opportunities at MAI to change jobs, improve oneself professionally, up to a point of course.
The benefits had been decent until about 2014 when the prices for healthcare and such really went up, and that got even worse when the company sold to Owens & Minor.

    Cons

Management Teams varied greatly in style and capabilities at each division, which was probably not too visible to most employees but for those of us who interfaced with each divisional management group made things very trying and difficult at times.
The CEO had incredible charisma, unfortunately he was very mercurial, and in my opinion often didn't give a chance for many long term strategies to actually start baring its fruits. This usually resulted in many changes in the corporate and sales structure. There were a few years when we would see at least one Sales Manager leave per month (about 80 or so reps in the field).

    Advice to Management

None - the company no longer exists. It was sold to Owens & Minor on the cheap. A colossal mistake, we could have easily gone back to $16 -18 per share (sold at $13.8) in the same year we sold.
We just needed a new CEO, not to sell.

    Pros

It was a pleasure to work with Medical Action Industries. Management was warm and close to everyone. I enjoyed during my 7+ years of working with them. Unfortunately company is acquired by a distributor and everyone moved to new jobs.

    Cons

all employees were laid off. poor decisions from management team.

    Advice to Management

You should have waited more to sell the company. Why were you in a rush?

I have been working at Medical Action Industries full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Many good people work here, the location/office environment is great, work is interesting, they let people go who aren't cutting it (i.e. no lazy coworker garuanteed a job), monthly breakfasts and frequent-enough all-hands-on-deck meetings, employee of the month award, pretty strict 9-5 policy.

    Cons

Pretty bureaucratic - upper management is upstairs and rarely seen, as the elevators they use go directly towards outside; lower level workers are downstairs. While people aren't impolite, this isn't the type of place where people go out of their way to be friendly. Also communication is not as open here as at other companies, alot of what goes on occurs in closed-door meetings. HR is very accessible here, which is good if you have an issue, but it leads to silly complaints going to HR - that you talk on the phone too loud, when maybe you only did a few times, or other petty things.

    Advice to Management

try to breakdown the canyon between the upper upper management and the rest of the company, value the feedback of workers at all levels.

I worked at Medical Action Industries full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

You learn to care for the person who was going to benefit from that finished product.

    Cons

At Medical Action, you work for a long period of time and then someone else is put over you, that dose not know the job you have been doing, but tell you how to do it.

    Advice to Management

Get to know the supervising crew at Medical Action better. [The ones to be hired in the last 8 years.]

    Pros

Good work/life balance most of the time, uncapped commissions, many good co-workers, wide variety of products to sell

    Cons

Products are begining to become comoditized, management is laking and middle management is inexperienced, room for advancement is limited and/or challanging to navigate.

    Advice to Management

Empower your employees; help them grow and promote within.
