I have been working at Medical College of Wisconsin full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I guess I should be happy that it's offered at all.

    Cons

Never had to pay so much out of pocket in medical bills by having employer offered coverage. Feels like a ploy to force me to switch to Medical College of WI physicians.

    Advice to Management

Stop searching for ways to deny claims. Offer a more common carrier like United Healthcare or Blue Cross.

I have been working at Medical College of Wisconsin full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great lab facilities - spacious lab benches, windows
    Access to core facilities
    Most major holidays off

    Cons

Non-competitive salaries and personal time (16 days annually)
Diminishing benefits (significantly reduced sick time), annual increases in health/vision/dental insurance
Basic science research secondary to the institute's other goals
Experiences will be heavily department specific:
    Very little career progression available
Heavy expectations for after hours and weekend availability
Department has a history of not retaining talent (combined effects of mismanagement, lack of career progression and uncompetitive salaries)

    Pros

MCW is a fairly large employer. In theory, once you're in, you have many directions and opportunities to choose from.
There are some really great leaders at MCW and the affiliated institutions.
What an honorable mission to be a part of!

    Cons

Some departments are outright terrible, from the employee perspective. I would caution against Surgery and Anesthesiology in general. Be it due to staffing levels, bad leadership, lack of support for staff/faculty, poor focus/low commitment to educational excellence, etc, there are departments you ought to avoid. Do your homework and try to speak with a few people in any prospective department who will level with you.

    Advice to Management

Empower staff to do their jobs well; provide and support opportunities for learning and growth. Be respectful. Do not undercut, meddle unnecessarily, throw your teammates under the bus, or bully. Address strengths AND areas for improvement early and regularly. Hire the best candidates; don't simply hire who you think will be content to stay in the same role indefinitely. Foster a community of people who treat each other as equals. Understand that people tend to leave managers, not jobs. Address performance issues fairly, firmly, respectfully and clearly. If you can say something, you should generally be prepared to put it in writing and deal with the results. Your teammates want your team to be successful. You should want success for every team member. Be as supportive as you can be toward those employees who need to find work happiness elsewhere; better to have them gone and happy than with you and unhappy. Lead by example; think carefully about whether your colleagues should do as you do. Allow people to fail, allow people to succeed, but don't stack the deck either way. Give tools, not handouts. Respect job descriptions.
