I have been working at Medtronic as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

When you are contract employee you get paid more than working for Medtronic directly. Mounds View campus if very beautiful and has all amenities that you would need.

    Cons

Contract positions you never know when you are going to get cut or if you contract will be renewed. Depending on the department that you are in will depend if you get hired full time Medtronic or not.

I have been working at Medtronic full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits, competitive salary, opportunities to change positions within the company, focus on employee health and volunteer opportunities.

    Cons

Very large company. You are a tiny fish in a very large pond. Can feel detached from the organization as a whole. Questionable actions by upper management when in a "cut spending" scenario.

    Advice to Management

Stop focusing so much on "goals" and "career paths" for your employees and actually find out what they need to succeed. Not everyone can fit into the cookie cutter plans you have laid out.

I have been working at Medtronic full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Industry leading medical device company. Takes good care of employees and good work/life balance.

    Cons

Very large with over 80,000 employees. Sometimes difficult to get things done and a lot of bureaucracy.

    Advice to Management

Figure out ways to maintain agility and cut through red tape.

I have been working at Medtronic full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent employee resources for networking and career development. The mission of the company is solid and many of the enployees take it to heart.

    Cons

In transition after large acquisition and cutting corners to save money- a lot of those corners are at the expense of employee satisfaction and managing reasonable workloads.

    Advice to Management

Don't go for quick wins with the budget and cost savings, create an avenue for employees to provide feedback and advice on how we can reduce waste and save money. Create incentives or recognition for employees who can successfully implement cost savings plans for the company.

I worked at Medtronic as an intern

I have been working at Medtronic full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Amazing mission. Hard not to feel good about Medtronic's contribution to the medical community.

Pay is fair, and bonus and incentives are very generous.

    Cons

Lack of strategy across business units. With an over-index in monthly and quarterly numbers, decisions to do the right thing in the long run almost never get made.

The CIO is not a CIO, and everyone knows hit. He is not even part of the Executive Committee, which tells you that IT is just a cost center to be managed and reduced, and not a strategic capability for growth.

I have been working at Medtronic full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Serving the mission, helping customers, putting the patient first.

    Cons

Belittle work completed, small pay raise, undermine hard working people.

    Advice to Management

I stopped buying Medtronic stock, I can't afford it. Cost of living is increasing yet this company cannot provide a decent pay increase for those who work 50+ hours a week. You are robbing the worker bees, and incentivizing the elite of the company. After acquiring a 1.5 billion dollar company you blame employees for spending too much money. Opportunity to climb the latter is horrible. Doing more with less burns people out.
