    Pros

Medtronic does a tremendous job of promoting employee development and utilizing the talents of the individuals in the employ. Not only do they encourage growth within your current job function, but they help you plan for future jobs/functions and connect you with employees in other functions/business units so that you can explore your options. The corporate and managerial support for growth and development is amazing.

    Cons

I can't think of anything specific to Medtronic, but it is industry and with that go a lot more SOPs and 'steps' that need to be taken. But again, that speaks to the quality effort so I really can't consider it a downside.

    Advice to Management

Keep disseminating information to employees regarding the direction of the company and initiatives being pursued by the company. Making sure all voices are heard helps to create and keep an engaged workforce.

    Pros

Medtronic has a strong culture and high morale among its workers. They treat the employees with respect. People seemed genuinely enthusiastic about fulfilling the Medtronic Mission, meaning that employees want what's best for the patients. The work environment is relaxed and trusting. There is decent collaboration between the business units.

    Cons

The decision-making process can be mind-numbingly slow. Medtronic's culture requires building consensus, and that seems to take far long than it should. Medtronic is also a risk-averse company, so many of the innovations are made by smaller, more agile competitors. There is a lot of bureaucracy, so forms abound. Also, being in the medical industry means dealing with government regulators, foreign and domestic, which can be trying.

    Advice to Management

Be more agile. Streamline the bureaucracy. Don't worry so much about building consensus for decisions. Allocate R&D based on the growth potential of each business unit -- specifically, spend A LOT less on R&D at CRDM.

    Pros

It was a very empowerful end friendly work environment, the product is great, the process is very sofisticated. They treat the employee with respect and are very professional. The only reason I left was an offer from my previous eloger to become a manager (from QA ENG to Eng Manager it was a huge jump and they coud not afford it or have higer positions open)

    Cons

That they do not have a facility in south florida were I just oved, I really would like to go bac to work with them

    Advice to Management

You have to take care of your engineers because there are many companies looking for the good peopla that you have and with a salary increas you can loose the easyly, give them that promotion they are expecting for the past 2 years. ake them senior or principal they are worth it.

    Pros

Medtronic offers a very competitive salary compared to most other medical device companies, opportunities for advancement are abundant, although there is much competition. Generally, we have a pretty flexible schedule as long as the work gets done. Maybe not PC to say, but ethnic and language barriers are a major source of frustration. After all, we are based an hour from San Francisco. The culture is, however, quite diverse. Nice stock options. Bonuses each year, depending on position and company performance. In general, I receive a 5% bonus per year, although this is not every single year. Overall, just OK.

    Cons

You are expected to work long hours in a very stuffy environment. Management makes decisions that are not well thought out. These decisions are often made by people with the least expertise on the topic. Medtronic's sluggish growth in the last year can largely be attributed to this one factor. The pressure to perform to meet deadlines is often met with reistant because objectives are not clear and timelines are often unrealistic. Overall, the chronic stress at this company leads to a very high turnover rate. Team perspectives are not considered. Nonexistent team dynamics, very much an every man for himself mentality.

    Advice to Management

Utilize your team more. We are the experts on the subject. You are merely a politician.

    Pros

Managment take interest in my personal and professional development. They are willing to give me opportunities if I simply present them.

    Cons

Large company, medical industry is highly regulated and can add lots off additional tasks to any marketable product at any stage of research, technology, development, or marketing.

    Advice to Management

Ask for input from those below you. Give employees an avenue to make their voice heard and make sure they understand that their voice is being heard. Base all our decisions around the patient and Medtronic Mission to maitain a company that has integrity and vision.

They are in a business that truly enhances the lives of others. They are a prestigious company. They actively support the community both financially and in terms of individuals who help others through volunteer efforts. They provide a highly professional work environment. The new facility in Mounds View is clean, modern, attractive, and comfortable. People are friendly and helpful. The company attracts people who want to do the right thing. They take pride in their work.

    Cons

There is not a lot of hand-holding with regard to professional development. The environment is best suited to someone who takes a lot of initiative to develop themself.
