I have been working at Melrose Public Schools part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You get to play with children and have fun. It is a perfect job for college kids.

    Cons

There is little to no room to move forward in the company.

    Advice to Management

Keep it up with the positive feedback to employees. It motivates people.

I worked at Melrose Public Schools full-time

    Pros

Very nice people. Student body very nice. Some diversity. Very large school.

    Cons

This school system does not retain librarians. This school district has a revolving door policy for
teacher-librarians that does not appear to be consistent with other subject teachers.

    Advice to Management

Radical review and policy reform to the role of certified professional librarians in your school system and contract agreements.

I worked at Melrose Public Schools full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There are some wonderful teachers who are dedicated, and work hard to educate their students. Teachers work under stressful conditions and there is a fair amount of camaraderie.

    Cons

The administration is very poor. Discipline issues are handled poorly, students may have little or no incentive to behave. The interior of the building is like a jail, cinder block walls, few windows, nasty lighting. The pay scale is among of the lowest in Massachusetts, giving some idea as to the level of support from the community. Turnover rate is very high.

    Advice to Management

Grow a backbone! Instead of firing teachers at a high rate, learn to mentor, cultivate and develop your staff. Stop with the catchy phases that "guide" your principles, life is more complicated than that.
