I have been working at Memphis Police Department (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great starting and top out salary
Co-workers may not always get along but are truly there when you need them... family-like environment.

    Cons

Under staffed, Mandatory Overtime, shortage of trainers- leaving under qualified people left to train the new hires which leads to poor job performance. There is NO room for advancement other than to become a supervisor and supv has no set shift, they can be working a day shift for years then be forced to go to 2nd or 3rd shift.

    Advice to Management

Its better to be over staffed than under staffed Especially in a position that SAVES LIVES. People have been retiring, resigning or getting promoted which leaves the shifts SHORT / Understaffed which in turn causes all the mandatory drafts. They are just now trying to correct this matter but they have a long way to go before the situation gets any better. Try to never let it get this bad again. Once the staffing situation is corrected, they need to start IN-SERVICE training again. Old and new dispatchers need ongoing training to improve job performance.

    Pros

great coworkers. The pay is pretty good when compared to the cost of living. Benefits were good, but that continues to fade.

    Cons

The cit decided that employees with less than 7.5 years of service no longer needed their pension. They also decided that retirees no longer needed health insurance. City instituted a 1 percent raise last year, which is the first raise in the last 8 years.

I have been working at Memphis Police Department full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

This department offers decent pay and good work/family life balance. Most of the equipment and training is up to date. Good place to start a career in law enforcement if your intentions are to eventually become a federal agent.

    Cons

This department is suffering from poor management, and a lack of support from city government. Also, promotions are extremely slow! I would definitely recommend researching other agencies before making a final pick.

    Advice to Management

Place forward thinking people with proven- results in top leadership and management positions.

    Pros

This apartment is large enough that they cannot micromanage you it would be impossible they usually keep fairly up-to-date equipment and there are good restaurants in the city

    Cons

This is a very racially tent city. The city does not respect the police officers. And they continue to take away from employee benefits.

    Advice to Management

Management has really little to do with the treatment of the people because its political so therefore I have nothing to say to the management

I have been working at Memphis Police Department (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Tight knit relationships built through joint life endangering experiences.

    Cons

The burden of the cities financial problems are placed on the backs of the workers. Promotions are too stagnant and benefits are being taken away.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your workers---this is to the mayor and council.
