I worked at Mental Health Association of South Central Kansas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good work experience to use elsewhere, not much more I can say. Good experience for students wanting to learn what NOT TO DO!

    Cons

Poor communication, poor Management and poor heartless Administration only there for a pay check. They use mentally ill clients for a paycheck. Outdated way of doing business, outdated everything. The over +50% turnover rate speaks for itself. They are practicing on their clients in a way that is super sad. Terrible hands down! Can not keep a grant to save their lives. Grants are here today and gone tomorrow (like your job, without notice).

    Advice to Management

Hire professionals who care, management should not be there only for a paycheck. Listen and respond to your employees who are in the trenches! Stop faking like you got it under control. Pay attention to the details "HIGH TURN" is for a reason. Hire professional Grant writers, REVAMP MGMT ADMINISTRATION TEAM! Honestly people!!!

I have been working at Mental Health Association of South Central Kansas part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Everyone who works at MHA is there because they're passionate about their job. That makes the work environment so much more enjoyable.

    Cons

The bathrooms are disgusting and our poor maintenance staff are constantly in there cleaning them. Employees and consumers use the same restrooms and the consumers frequently miss the toilet. I never would have thought the worst part of my job would be the bathrooms.

    Pros

Excellent supervisors who worked diligently to ensure the quality of life of the population they served and were never too busy to help out their employees.

    Cons

On-call could take a toll on the weekends, but even this requirement was rotated through and more than adequate compensation was offered.

I have been working at Mental Health Association of South Central Kansas full-time

    Pros

They will hire just about anyone.

    Cons

Staff is unfriendly, communication is lacked in every department. Managers are unqualified and unprofessional. Consumers are not properly cared for and are just there for the agency to collect from the insurance companies. It is very sad to watch and if you care for other people this is not the place for you.

    Advice to Management

Work on your communication, do not be petty YOU ARE THE BOSS. Take care of your consumers as they are the ones keeping your doors open.

    Pros

Peer Specialist will function as a role model to peers; exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills; serve as a consumer advocate, providing consumer information and peer support for clients in outpatient and inpatient settings. The PS performs a wide range of tasks to assist peers of all ages, from young adult to old age, in regaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery process. Recovery resources such as booklets, tapes, pamphlets and other written materials will be utilized by the Peer Specialist in the provision of services.

    Cons

Had to take a test even though i was a very good peer support specialist and they let me go. They said that I could apply in 3 months.

    Advice to Management

The manager at where I worked was extremely nice to certain employee but was mean to others.

I have been working at Mental Health Association of South Central Kansas full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, lots of time off and you will learn a lot

    Cons

Poor pay, tyrant behavior by mid management is encouraged by senior management. tons and tons of repetitive, trivial paperwork and extremely disorganized. Ever changing goals and unrealistic expectations

    Advice to Management

Start acknowledging staff's issues and complaints instead of throwing them under the bus. When someone comes to you with a problem address it in a professional manner instead of just brining it up at an administrative meeting.

I worked at Mental Health Association of South Central Kansas full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Focus of the overall company is wonderful.

    Cons

Seems as if you wear many hats and are expected to do many things that you were not hired to do and/or out of your knowledge to do. Lots of gossip, and back stabbing between employees. They care for the consumers far more then their employees.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. Stop the gossip. Help your employees.

I have been working at Mental Health Association of South Central Kansas part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good management-- bosses aren't unreasonable and don't stand over your shoulders all the time, layoffs are rare, usually plenty of hours to go around, work is not severely stressful or demanding. As long as you do your job, are honest and keep up with your deadlines, you don't need to worry about losing your job due. People don't lose their job due to petty office politics or personal grudges like many other jobs, either. This is social work-- we have bigger problems.

    Cons

Takes a long time to move up within company, raises are small since it's a non-profit. Supervision is minimal, so have to be proactive if you need help from bosses. Sometimes inter-departmental communication is a little lax.

    Advice to Management

    not applicable.
