I have been working at Mentor Graphics full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Lot of opportunities to work on challenging problems. Good work atmosphere and management cares about employees unlike the biggest EDA provider. Overall very good place to work.

    Cons

Overall behind other two big EDA providers so always trying to catch up. Would be good to be leader in multiple area rather than 1-2. But then it also provides opportunity to come up with new solutions that could leap-frog the leaders.

    Advice to Management

Fund initiatives that can help Mentor be leader in additional areas as well. Competition has big pockets so don't be shy of long-term investment.

    Pros

    Some good skilled employees.
    Benefits are decent

    Cons

No vacation policy anymore. So most people end up working long time with no vacation. Due to this many frustrated employee.
Due to the revenue downgrades there are lot of politics and things are getting ugly.
Not a happy work place that it used to be
As many have mentioned, there is no career growth unless you are highly political. Mostly I will be a software engineer here forever.

    Advice to Management

Need to get handle on the politics before it destroys the company. Build career paths for employees.

I worked at Mentor Graphics (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Easy life. Very good work-life balance. Good amenities. Mostly relaxed people.

    Cons

The company has lost most of its talent through attrition. Now, the left over employees control most of the show. Some try to pressure the new comers with threats and other tricks. The company management is not really interested to promote the good people, and seems content with mediocre results and stays aloof. If it was, it would have started a 360 degree review process and taken other steps. The long timers have created layers of themselves to shield themselves. This creates a very demotivating experience for any new employee. Many of them don't contribute anything.

The company may be looking to close its US operations completely, and so is not really interested in keeping anyone.

    Advice to Management

    Connect with your employees.

I worked at Mentor Graphics full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Very good salary, bonuses, and stock purchase plan. The quality of management varies widely from one department to another, but I had a great manager. There are relatively few layers of bureaucracy considering how big the company is. While layoffs do occur, they are not the first go-to option like it is for most companies these days.

    Cons

The philosophy is to run very lean, meaning you just never seem to have enough people to get the job done.
