I worked at Mentor Graphics (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The campus and employee offices are quite nice. Most employees have private offices, which is very nice and helps a lot when things get noisy. Salaries are competitive, but nothing more. Benefits are not up to par anymore.

    Cons

In the past, the company had the nickname "the country club" as it was very employee centric, good benefits, nice offices, and a communicative management.

Practically none of that exists anymore. Vacations were reduced to 2 weeks for all, then 24 days, now it's up to you and your boss. Why? Not because of employee needs but some accounting trick.

Benefits have fallen to average at best. While management used to be very communicative, it's no so anymore.

The worst things about Mentor are, one, there is no interest whatsoever in your career, future desires or internal promotions. No one ever asked me (or anyone I know) "what would you like to be doing in 5 years?" Why? Because you are virtually guaranteed that you will be doing the same job year after year. Two, the performance reviews are unrealistic and de-motivating. Most departments distribute "Exceeds expectations" as if they were gold bars. People try hard for a couple of years, then realize it's pointless to work hard as there will be no reward.

This is all sad, as there are many smart and competent people at Mentor, but the company has no interest in nurturing them.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your people or you are going to lose a lot of good ones as the economy continues to improve.

    Pros

    Some good skilled employees.
    Benefits are decent

    Cons

No vacation policy anymore. So most people end up working long time with no vacation. Due to this many frustrated employee.
Due to the revenue downgrades there are lot of politics and things are getting ugly.
Not a happy work place that it used to be
As many have mentioned, there is no career growth unless you are highly political. Mostly I will be a software engineer here forever.

    Advice to Management

Need to get handle on the politics before it destroys the company. Build career paths for employees.

I have been working at Mentor Graphics full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company has liberal culture, generous benefits, not-so-deep management hierarchy, decent employee training programs, company events, volunteer programs etc.

    Cons

As a mid-size company (~5000 employees), some employees relax as much as possible and that makes the company less attractive to hard-working and ambitious people

    Advice to Management

Don't have too much to say about besides what has been mentioned in pros and cons. The company may need to recruit some middle-level management teams that focus on vision into the future.

I worked at Mentor Graphics (More than 10 years)

    Pros

If you have five years or less left until retirement, Mentor Graphics is the perfect place to retire in place before you really retire. The campus is very nice and most employees enjoy a private office. While not as outstanding as it once was, the compensation is still pretty competitive. If you live in southwest Washington County, the commute is nice.

    Cons

The scars of the Late-Dot-Oh Falcon framework hamstring the company. The risk aversion has grown into a phobia of change. The oldest possible version is used, including an in-house build system that, while clever twenty-five years ago, solves a problem that no longer exists. Most managers would rather fail than make the wrong decision, leading them to attend meetings and collect a paycheck but do very little else. Their emphasis on retention seems to have selected those who have given up, not those who get things done.

    Advice to Management

All management needs to choose to actively manage their direct reports. Abandon the "battling business units" philosophy of leaving every group to its own devices and directly manage what happens in their organization. Adopt a bias for action rather than inaction. Reward smart risk-taking. Foster innovation within the company instead of trying to acquire it via M&A.
