I worked at Mentor Graphics (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Large product line of complementary products to support the entire design automation process. Solid company with a good business ethic and quality products.

    Cons

As in all growing companies the sales territories keep getting smaller so each year gets a little tougher to blow away your numbers.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work....

    Pros

Great campus though located far from biggest customers

    Cons

Manage ran the company like a country club for themselves
The company lacks strategic identity - what are they - extraction company, pcb company, emulation company...

    Advice to Management

Give the company a true strategic vision and mission for the next 5-10 years. If the stock price is somewhat a gauge of your success, compare yourself agains Cadence and Synopsys - without the Carl Icahn bump - the company has done nothing .... And with Carl now exiting look what's happening and what that says about your management.

    Pros

Location. Work. Management. Daily benefits. Telecommuting. Flexibility.

    Cons

No real opportunities to grow from within. Salary is lower than competition for same/similar job. Bonuses are getting lower and expectations are getting higher. At this rate, it is expected that we will not see bonuses in the future. Training is severly lacking; almost non-existant.

    Advice to Management

Hire management from within. Review bonuses.

    Pros

Good work life balance. Company cares for its employees and comes up with market leading products in EDA world.
People who are with this company are here for the long haul.

    Cons

Being a technical company quite flat for engineers- shouldn't be a surprise.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Mentor Graphics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Many of Mentor products are Top Rated in the Electronic Design industry.

    Cons

For the most part developers here need to have understanding in designing hardware. The company products cover two major areas Circuit Board design and Silicon test and mask verification. Down side in the PCB group is that it is primarily in maintenance. The Silicon products for the most part expect Phd researchers.

    Advice to Management

Recognize that anyone that has the time and face of a customer that they should have the training to address any Mentor product issue or short comings. Product trainers especially since the time they have is longer and often more diverse than any product marketing or application manager.
