    Pros

    Laid back culture. Interesting problems.

    Cons

Run as a bunch of separate businesses. Many products are poor quality and way outdated, and engineers motivated to fix that often encounter heavy "don't fix what works" resistance from management. Of the several groups, there are only a select few which work on competitive products, and if you don't get in those right groups, you will run into heavy politics, and if you are the type who doesn't care for politics, your career will definitely pay the price.

    "Politics, Politics"

    Pros

good amount of vacation (although they reduced it)
    nice facilities
    everyone has an office
    good benefits
pay is probably better than it should be for most people there
bonuses can be good, but the process of determining them is usually "gamed" and you never have a clue what is going to happen.

    Cons

    tons of office politics
    middle managers abuse their power
difficult to move around within the company
underskilled workers who are full of themselves, and overly impressed by their own abilities

I worked at Mentor for quite a few years, but in the last few years, things suddenly got a lot worse. The amount of office politics is just staggering, and completely shut off the ability to get work done and create products. It was all about middle management and building their little castles, and who liked whom, and who got credit for what, and whose idea things were, blah blah blah. At the end, we had managers telling others not to talk to various people on the team, belittling, insulting, and cussing out people in meetings, completely throwing out the peer review process, and doing reviews based on what they alone "thought about the person" (i.e., whether the person brown-nosed enough) etc. It's just an absolute madhouse there, I've never encountered anything quite like it (thank goodness) in my professional life.

    Advice to Management

You guys need to hold your middle management accountable and quash all the office politics. You'd be surprised how many people you have there whose only interest is in self-promotion, not the company.

    Pros

I've been working for Mentor Graphics for many years now. Smart coworkers, great environment, great opportunities for career advancement, great vacation - 24 working days! Overall, a great place to be.

    Cons

Compensation package is not on par with other companies in the same industry. Stock options are deplorable, bonus is minimal, base salary lags behind other companies', incompentence is tolerated more than I'd like it to be.

    Advice to Management

Upper management is driving the company in the right direction

    Pros

Stability, growth position in the EDA industry. Has shown ability to development new products within rather than just acquire which is unusual within big companies.

    Cons

Big company, not generous with stock options or profit sharing. Quite a bit of out sourcing is occurring to India, Egypt, Eastern Europe, Pakistan, China

    Advice to Management

Must be willing to challenge your viewpoints and take risks. Innovation doesn't happen without it and without innovation you'll be left buying start ups and not truly increasing the companies net worth and therefore it's stock..

    Pros

Great Work Culture. Many new technologies. The group I worked in was startup culture. Lots of freedom in what I did and lots of support from management.

    Cons

Localized expertise and less options to move around the company. Transitioning from engineering to management could be difficult, especially if you are working on core technologies

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. It is a great place to work
