I have been working at Mercantile Bank full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent culture with great leadership. Mercantile will invest in your future and help you develop.

    Cons

None that I can think of. You are asked to work hard and be fully engaged, so if you are a slacker this is not your place.

    Advice to Management

Keep on doing what you are!

I worked at Mercantile Bank full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -meeting new people
    -helping others
    -learning about banking
-great place to get into banking before deciding to make it a career.

    Cons

    - rude and neurotic customers that feel that they must treat you horribly to get something done.
-having to constantly say sorry to the customer for others mistakes or because mobile banking isn't working for them.
-having to deal with the software in general.
-high turnover of great employees for no apparent reason.
-constantly worrying if someone is trying to commit fraud in anyway.
    - not knowing who to call to get the customer help.
-employees who are on the front lines have no understanding of what a mortgage lender offers or sells to customers yet, there expected to answer mortgage questions.

    Advice to Management

-don't pressure employees to get bigger and bigger deals or get so many things done because customer service suffers and then that means less customers to bank with.
-perhaps include a diagram of who to call when customer has a set problem there are to many departments and sometimes you have to call 3 before you find your answer.

I worked at Mercantile Bank full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, pretty stable, opportunity to advance. I started off as a teller, I became a vault custodian.

    Cons

Management that expects tellers to stand on feet all day and never use a chair at teller stations.

I worked at Mercantile Bank part-time

    Pros

Friendly coworkers, large cubicles and nice buildings. Bank holidays are really nice. More local bank

    Cons

Abysmal pay rates, no commission. Unfair distribution of vacation days. Managers select days off first before giving calendar to other employees-issues of favoritism etc. perpetuate unfairness.

    Advice to Management

Make sure employees feel appreciated for their work with pay that is comparable to your competitors. Otherwise you and your customers will continue to suffer from high turnover rates!

I worked at Mercantile Bank part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The people I worked with were all nice. Overall company culture was good if not a bit boring, but that may just be a given with banks. Their training program was robust too. I certainly learned a lot in my relatively brief time there.

    Cons

Employee turnover was pretty high. Also, they promote that they only hire the best talent and their recruiting practices reflect that, but the salary did not.

  9. "Good first job. Thorough training. Large turnover."

    Pros

Structured company. Fun company. If you enjoy banking it is a good place to get your feet wet.

    Cons

Not the best pay. Little room for growth after you hit senior analyst. Drives a quick turnover.

    Advice to Management

Somehow incorporate a junior lending office role. Too many senior analysts. Increase in pay would also benefit people staying.

I worked at Mercantile Bank full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people at Mercantile are great. Overall very positive environment, a lot of involvement with community, a lot of encouragement to be involved in other groups, volunteer, etc. Also, you have a lot of visibility into how the company is run, the vision, etc., which is great. Great benefits, time off, etc. They will invest highly in training you.

    Cons

Given that it is a smaller bank, there are not a lot of opportunities for promotion, advancement. The work load can be demanding at times, high expectations.

    Advice to Management

The importance of mid level management is key to morale and overall happiness of employees.
