I have been working at Mercatus Center full-time

    Pros

    -the community is great
-benefits are amazing--Mercatus pays your health insurance premiums and deductible!! you can also take 2 classes per semester at GMU for free
    -lots of room for growth

    Cons

I don't have a great work/life balance since there's a bit of an expectation of being "always available" on the comms team unless you set very specific personal boundaries.

I worked at Mercatus Center (Less than a year)

    Pros

It's a good place if you want to take PHD. And people is very nice. It's close to DC, so there have many activities.

    Cons

Met with interdisciplinary team of 10 weekly to discuss the new regulations.
Read and understood articles about payday loan the supervisor assigned.
Analyzed how storefront payday loan and internet loans were influenced by government regulation.

    Advice to Management

Efficiently used SAS to analyze storefront payday loan, internet payday loan and internet installment loan.
Oversaw the data and logic for entire foundation, totaling 95 million data for storefront + 7 million data for internet.

I worked at Mercatus Center part-time

    Pros

They have great programs for grad / Ph.D students. Reliable funding while getting a degree. Helpful staff, generally responsive, and good connections with other related institutions.

    Cons

Hard to publish work with them unless it fits the ideological mold. But that shouldn't be any huge surprise if you go in with your eyes open.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing? Mercatus Center has a very clear goal and goes after it. I'm not sure what else there is to say: it's a libertarian think tank and that's how it runs.

I worked at Mercatus Center part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

All around valuable experience. Development team wants you to learn more about that facet of the non-profit industry, while at the same time advancing their philosophy. Lots to do in the area near the offices as well.

    Cons

Sometimes data-entry work can be dull and repetitive. Parking options in the area were also very expensive.

    Advice to Management

Not much. Perhaps a more diverse array of projects to undertake, rather than regular data-entry. Also include more hands-on use of software widely used in the industry, such as Salesforce.

I worked at Mercatus Center part-time

    Pros

Work with smart free-market economists who care about their work.
Not worked very hard, but you can find more work easily if you want it.
GMU econ degree gets paid for

    Cons

    GMU econ not very rigorous

I have been working at Mercatus Center (More than a year)

    Pros

The people are friendly and most everyone operates on an open door policy. Easy access to senior level staff and they are not heavy handed about research topics or direction. They schedule seminars for professional development and mixer events to make it a social environment. We recently moved to a beautiful new office space.

    Cons

The publication process--getting feedback from outside reviewers or editorial help can be painfully slow if your project is not a high priority. In fairness, this is not a problem unique to Mercatus, academic publishing is generally a slow process.
