I have been working at Merced County Office of Education full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Positive at the beginning, however you eventually notice the obvious negative culture of upper management that becomes far too overwhelming. Working with students and most other staff is very satisfying. Benefits are sufficient and some supervisors if your lucky are flexible and understanding of your needs.

    Cons

Pay is relatively low compared too other areas and very few people value your work and what you contribute to the organization. Often times you feel like there is zero communication, zero positive or healthy work environments across departments and you constantly feel like nothing more than a piece of meat regardless of how much effort, time and energy you contribute. If you hear your supervisor or manager say "Thank you" or "Good job", then savior that moment because it is rare. You will also rarely receive expected outcomes of an assigned task.

    Advice to Management

Respect your employees and their needs. Express how much value each employee adds to the organization. Hold positive meetings that add value instead of negativity. I can not express the need for professional development enough and this needs to spread to more employees than just management.

    Pros

The starting pay rates is very high for the area. Other teachers do not get paid the same starting rate. The opportunities to transfer laterally are also very high. It is easy to tansfer to another area if you would like. The management is very competent at what they do. You are allowed to call in sick as much as neccessary and they are usually very understanding of taking sick days. Reviews are conducted once a year and are normally prompt and are helpful at times. You get to work with children which is of course the best part. The benefits are also fairly decent.

    Cons

Oppurtunity for growth and higher payscales is limited. Furthering your education will not get you any extra money at all. You do not get paid over-time, even when you have to stay for a minimum of thirty minutes extra every day. Instead you simply get comp time whihch oyu are never allowed to use. You are never granted time off if you request it ahead of time. There is definite favoritism in promotions. If you don't know someone in management chances are slim that you will get the most sought after positions. Due to the budget cuts no one's job is very secure at all.

    Advice to Management

    To listen to the teachers.
