Pros
Cons
  • Pay isn't as good as some boutique consultancies but in my opinion the pros make up for this - much better work life balance (in 104 reviews)

  • Those who can't handle the long hours and pressure to deliver under tight deadlines may find it difficult to thrive here (in 60 reviews)

I have been working at Mercer full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Flexible working
Good hours (some overtime but not crazy!)
    People are very nice
    Good research powerhouse
    Great location and regional offices

    Cons

    Focus on shareholders and profit
US have to approve budgets etc
Pay isn't as good as some boutique consultancies but in my opinion the pros make up for this - much better work life balance

    Advice to Management

Promote because someone deserves it, don't just not because you can't squish a little extra in the budget as otherwise that person will just leave in a few months any way which would cost more money! Also, before recruiting outside, look at the current staff and see if anyone deserves to be promoted first.

I have been working at Mercer full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of really great people to work with, on interesting projects, for interesting clients. A well-recognised name in the industry, with strength in its core areas. People can advance, and promotions tend to be fair.

    Cons

Company promotes people who are good individual contributors into management roles without consideration as to whether they are actually good managers. IT is woefully outdated. Learning and development opportunities are limited.

    Advice to Management

Stop with the almost non-stop reoganisations and rebrandings. Invest more in your people and IT systems. Shift to a more long-term focus so people aren't making only short-term decisions.

I worked at Mercer full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Plenty of opportunities, good working environment, good social scene, good IT facilities and systems, ambitious business plans.

    Cons

Can be higher pressure on billable hours; some people can be hard to work with; significant oposition to innovation; experience can be highly dependent on who you mainly work with, which is pot luck; exam salary increments haven't changed for 15 years.

    Advice to Management

Develop a better training routine for new grads and regular services. Too many mistakes happen because of, and so much inefficiency is due to, the lack of a defined process.

I worked at Mercer full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-I constantly met such nice, charming and intelligent people in Mercer, it's definitely the reason that makes you want to stay
-AMAZING pension, Mercer contributes SO much to your pot
-fantastic benefits (health care, gadget insurance, etc) plus sailing weekends throughout the summer, brilliant!
-quarterly team events/nights out plus the inevitable xmas do in the city, always an impressive venue
-management do everything by the book, they really care about their teams and will be very fair in any situation you may bring up
-majority are genuine trustworthy people. Decent people!
    -highly professional
    -very supportive of work/life balance

    Cons

-really tight when it comes to salaries and investment.
-Deluded by thinking they're keeping up with 21st century digital trends. They don't know what they are doing in this area and really need to consider investing in talented people in the right fields to get them up to speed
-typical corporate with too many management layers, this results in the simplest of things taking too long to be decided and turned around
-HR department incredibly slow in pretty much everything they do

    Advice to Management

Invest in creative people such as designers with real experience and qualifications, they will offer Mercer what they need to keep up with the times. You're not there yet. I think it would help you if senior management communicated with creative marketing agencies in industry, this will offer you insight into what you're lacking in-house.

    Pros

They allow you to get your work done, without micromanagement. Free fruit if you are quick enough to find it before it goes. Canteen with great healthy food

    Cons

There is no backup if something goes wrong. The office is very boring.

    Advice to Management

Try livening the space up a little.
