  • Those who can't handle the long hours and pressure to deliver under tight deadlines may find it difficult to thrive here (in 62 reviews)

    Cons

    Pros

Failure is seen as par for the course.

    Cons

Abysmal technological infrastructure and hypocritical HR policies. There's nepotism at every bend and only the squeaky wheel or the inept rise to the top.

    Advice to Management

If you want to be a leader in advancing health, wealth and careers, begin by doing it within the company.

    Pros

Really good work/life balance. Management is more on the laid back side, but that has it's good aspects and bad aspects.

    Cons

Not very much collaboration between colleagues.

    Advice to Management

Continue to give employees the ability to be independent. Work on getting people to work together more often.

    Pros

The Health & Welfare benefit plans the company offers are good. The paid time off is generous.

    Cons

Expect to work long hours, weekends, holidays, because the work is never done. Expect any OT to NOT be approved. You work 65 hours and get paid for 40. The pay is very low...like morale. Expect to be asked to give up some of your vacation time. You are offered much paid time off, but getting to use it is a challenge. There is not a standard training program for new Health & Welfare Analysts. It's all hands-on learning with little to no support. Other analysts can't help you learn because they can't spare any time away from their own client work. Expect to be micro-managed by a team lead who can't help problem-solve because s/he doesn't know how to do the tasks that the analyst has to do. The team leads don't add value.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the concerns of the employees. Support them! In case you haven't noticed, the attrition rate is alarming. Do a better job recruiting team leads.

    Pros

Great benefits like 7% 401k employer contribution if you contribute at least 6% and 2 months paid parental leave for each baby you or a spouse has. Generally a very helpful environment with tons of resources and subject matter experts.

    Cons

Work in health and benefits can become very repetitive because it is very cyclical in nature - each year is basically the same for each client. Work most of the time is pretty transactional. Mercer plays up the strategic nature of their work but it is employee benefits so there is only so much you can do. It feels like you have to fight tooth and nail each year to get a decent raise; if you don't constantly self promote to management, you end up with no raise or something very small.

    Advice to Management

Do more to actively promote different career paths to employees with interests/career aspirations outside of benefits

I have been working at Mercer full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great coworkers, excellent benefits and good experience from meeting a recruiter at a summer job fair in July who recommended me for this role rather than the call center all the way through to today... clients are top tier and there is always challenge.

    Cons

The pace can be very brisk and I still don't know what is going on with the company at a high level (nor do I know who HR is).

    Advice to Management

The company is so large it would be great if there was away to bring departments and offices closer together. I have only been here 6 months so time will tell...

    Pros

Nothing at all. This company is a sad case and they really should get a clue. They have no culture and need to learn transparency.

    Cons

No transparency. No culture. Poor management and clueless higher ups.
Poor recruiting process and all around bad relationships. Not a good company to work for.

    Advice to Management

Learn what you’re doing. Also, try to learn the meaning of the word “transparency.” It’s sad when you see so many negative reviews for one company. Everybody can’t possibly be lying.
