I worked at Mercury Marine full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great pay for the area. Great co-workers. Very safety focused. Pay raises are decent, with alot of chances of overtime if you want it.

    Cons

No chance of advancement. Management sucks, union sucks. Can force you to work within a days notice. So not much time for family if you don't want to work the weekend.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your employees more.

I worked at Mercury Marine as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great people to work with. Most people I worked with directly were very nice and extremely helpful. The work, when I had anything to do, was engaging and kept me thinking.

    Cons

I had very little work to do. Some weeks I would spend 30+ hours at my desk waiting for projects. I would ask my manager and co-workers for work, but they had nothing for me to do. I was not allowed to seek projects in other departments for fear that something would come up in my department. This was my personal experience in my department, others in other areas had many projects to work on and rarely had down time.

    Advice to Management

Interact with your interns more and keep tabs on what they are doing. I would often complete tasks that management said would take a few days, usually before lunch. Have work to pass down.

    Pros

Opportunity to advance for those willing to climb the corporate ladder

    Cons

Culture on shop floor is very demoralizing, good, ambitious employees eventually develop attitude and mindset of the unhappy folks surrounding them.

    Advice to Management

Come up with a realistic plan that will work and stick with it.

I have been working at Mercury Marine full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Mercury is a great company to work for. They have some of the most talented people working on the shop floor. There are many opportunities to advance within the company, even positions at corporate.

    Cons

The mindset of most employees are generating the most engines and not so much about quality engines. This is the fault of management. The culture needs major reform to a Quality and safety culture. Depending on who you report to, your work/life balance may be off.

    Advice to Management

The company put safety as their #1 priority, but failed to make it a priority because not every manager/supervisor is open to let their direct reports go home for doctor's appointment...shame on the company for not having any policy to help the fellow employees.
