    Pros

Great co-workers and direct management team. The ER team really works well together and creates a fun environment even with the stressful work that we do.

    Cons

Departments don't work well together. Lack of communication between departments creates un-needed friction. The floors are not appropriately staffed which creates an unsafe environment in the ER with holding 20+ patients a night.

    Advice to Management

When making changes that span several departments, such as the way report is given from ED staff to the floor RN, have every nurse sign off on the change so that they can't say they knew nothing of the change.

I worked at Mercy Medical Center - Des Moines full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Awesome coworkers! Some of the best ER docs I have ever worked with. Sadly two of them left due to job dissatisfaction.

    Cons

No support from administration. We always were short staffed yet they wouldn't add more nursing positions. Quick burnout and high turnover within clinical staff.

    Advice to Management

Support your nurses, providers and CNAs! Without these essential staff members the patients would have no care. Patients pick up on the fact that the staff is tired, burnt and overworked. Also the pay is some of the worst I've had in my nursing career despite multiple positive reviews.

    Always sharing budget woes.
Raises kept to under 2% for many years.
    No room for growth.
No support of development and learning.

    Advice to Management

Work on the budget so it isn't always doom and gloom.
    Raises should be more competitive.
Strengthen career ladders for all departments.

    Pros

Great working with the physicians and support staff to schedule patients

    Cons

Compensation is the worst I've ever seen. The stress and demand of the job is not worth the pay and benefits packages they offer.

I worked at Mercy Medical Center - Des Moines (More than a year)

    Pros

It is in Des Moines, Iowa so if you want to work in Des Moines its good.

    Cons

Place little to no value on staff. No one is happy from physicians to nurses to ancillary staff. You will be overworked and underpaid. Very high physician turnover.

    Advice to Management

Staff satisfaction leads to patient satisfaction. Investing in good people is cheaper than training everyone all the time.

I have been working at Mercy Medical Center - Des Moines full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Depending on the area/supervisor it can be a great place to work. Recently received a pay increase to be just slightly lower than competitors.

    Cons

As a member of the Catholic Health Initiatives group Mercy does not consider Easter a holiday. PTO has been systematically reduced since joining CHI.

    Advice to Management

Unions will hurt CHI, increase workers benefits to prevent organization of unions.
