    Pros

A demanding company that sets high goals for it's employees. if your interested there is a wide range of options for your advancement. The company offers a good health program and corporate stock purchase. The 401K is good but not the best.

    Cons

The company often downsize without notice, so it's best to keep a resume updated. The hours can be long to meet deadlines and and the staff is cut to barebones so you often are called on to do more than your job description. Older employees (55+) are often cut to save money on retirement and health plans.

I have been working at Meredith Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Most people are young and committed professionals, that makes work easier for the most part.
In general, teams are tightly integrated and you can get to know each other quickly.
Strengths and weaknesses are acknowledged and it's easy to know where to go when you need help with specific issues.
It's a good gig if you're starting and you need a lot of experience in a short amount of time.

    Cons

    Managers are almost non-existent.
There is no where to go regarding career opportunities. It's surprising for such a big company but if you find something you like in other areas, chances are your manager won't let you switch, it's extremely political.
There are no promotions and no raises ANYWHERE in the company other than the occasional VP and SVP movement. Nothing for the mortals.
Hours could be very long without any type of incentive or compensation in sight, they won't even buy you lunch.
The company insists in pushing a "healthy lifestyle" agenda but fails to provide the basics to help with it (bicycle parking, decent hours so you can go to the gym, etc).
Wellness program is only aimed to lower healthcare costs, nobody really cares about your healthy habits otherwise.
New Year's parties are catered with soda in red cups and cheap wraps at the atrium of the building.
If this is not your first job you'll be disappointed of how little they pay and how much they expect of you.
We're told every meeting that the company wants people making careers here, that you should consider staying for years and years but still there's a high employee turnover in every department.
Every April at least 300 people will get fired, get used to it and you can only pray it's not you; then they'll call a meeting and tell you that the company is doing great and that you're a great employee and valuable asset.

    Advice to Management

You should respond to your teams too, not only your superiors. The people who do the dirty job is never compensated for it; there's a reason why so many people leave after a couple of years at the most, and it's not because of everyone being flaky.

I have been working at Meredith Corporation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Meredith is one of those diamond in the rough companies that is so hard to find. They are ethical, honest, focused and smart in how they operate their business. The decisions they make always include an element of "how will this affect our people". In an ever changing economic environment, Meredith is one that I am extremely proud to be a part of and thankful for, knowing that from the top down this company cares about ME as an employee. I am not just a number.

    Cons

In some markets, Meredith wages are a bit low, however the off set of that is flexible work schedules, amazing benefits, and a strong company that supports their employees on a variety of levels.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work and never lose sight of what makes this company great - your people!

I worked at Meredith Corporation full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

My bosses were always helpful, fair and hands-off. As long as I met my due dates I came and went as I pleased.

Extra vacation days in the summer are an excellent perk. I remained at Meredith for a couple of years solely because of the on-site gyms and workout classes.

Do the work, build your portfolio, network like mad and get out before you get laid off.

    Cons

Pay was below-average for the industry. Raises are rare on the publishing side, frequent on the broadcast side, mirroring each division's financials.

Openings rarely go to internal candidates. Very hard to be promoted and advance.

Steady layoffs and contraction on the publishing side kept everyone fearful and paranoid. Lots of energy is wasted worrying about what is next. Stockholders come first, second and third. MDP has zero loyalty to you.

    Advice to Management

High staff turnover is a choice. Is it worth the cost?

Is spending $30K/employee/year on stock buy-backs the best use of cash flow? No other ideas to improve shareholder value?

I have been working at Meredith Corporation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible hours, summer hours, nice workout facilities.

    Cons

Upper management is very disconnected. There are no promotion opportunities and very little training. Departments are always squabbling and can't ever seem to work together. Goals change constantly - sometimes even daily. Reorgs are frequent and lead to mass confusion all the time.

    Advice to Management

Stop micromanaging. Actually listen to your employees opinions and ideas and allow them to do the work you hired them to do. Create a plan that lasts more than a week.
